In December 2023, I embarked on a week-long mandatory CAS trip to Jambughoda, Gujarat, alongside two classes from my school. This experience took me out of my comfort zone and immersed me in the natural beauty and challenges of outdoor trekking. During this trip, we lived without the comforts of modern amenities, embraced the wilderness, and took on physically demanding treks. It was an opportunity to not only connect with nature but also with my peers, as we navigated the ups and downs of the journey together. The trip allowed me to develop new skills, demonstrate perseverance, and reflect on my connection to the environment. Below are the three key learning outcomes (LOs) I achieved through this experience.
LO2: Demonstrate that challenges have been undertaken, developing new skills in the process.
- The Jambughoda trip was filled with challenges, both physical and mental. Trekking through the rugged terrain in unfamiliar surroundings required endurance and strength. It was physically demanding, especially when we encountered steep paths and rocky trails, and the cold weather added an extra layer of difficulty. I learned to pace myself during the treks, manage my energy, and motivate others who were struggling. This experience helped me build my resilience and develop practical skills, like reading trails and maintaining a positive attitude even in difficult conditions. By the end of the week, I felt a sense of accomplishment and growth, having pushed my limits in a completely new environment.
LO4: Show commitment to and perseverance in CAS experiences.
- The trip required consistent effort, from waking up early for the treks to adapting to a simple lifestyle without many comforts. Living in basic accommodations with limited access to technology and amenities demanded a shift in mindset. Despite the cold and tiring hikes, I committed to making the most of each day. Whether it was participating in group activities, helping with meal preparations, or simply engaging in conversations with peers around a campfire, I stayed dedicated throughout the week. This perseverance allowed me to appreciate the experience deeply, even when it felt challenging, and to develop a newfound appreciation for simplicity and nature.
LO5: Demonstrate the skills and recognize the benefits of working collaboratively.
- Collaboration was essential throughout the trip, as we had to work together to overcome challenges and make the experience enjoyable for everyone. From setting up tents and gathering firewood to navigating trails as a group, teamwork played a key role in our success. I often found myself taking the initiative to encourage and support others during the more strenuous parts of the treks, ensuring that no one was left behind. Working together to solve problems and sharing responsibilities strengthened our bonds and taught me the value of supporting one another. This collaborative spirit made the challenging moments easier to handle and turned the trip into a rewarding experience.
The Jambughoda CAS trip was an unforgettable experience that taught me valuable lessons in resilience, teamwork, and adaptability. By stepping out of my comfort zone and embracing the challenges of outdoor trekking, I was able to develop new skills and deepen my appreciation for the natural world. The trip provided an opportunity to connect with my peers in a meaningful way and reflect on the importance of perseverance. It was more than just a physical journey; it was a journey of self-discovery, where I learned to value simplicity, nature, and the power of working together. This experience has left a lasting impact on me, reminding me that sometimes, the greatest growth happens outside our comfort zones.
