(Completed the strand C- creativity, as we had to give suggestions about our outfits, rearrange them, select makeup and hairstyles, and put the whole skit together.)
FS Got Talent is an event that provides participants with the opportunity to showcase their strongest skills and talents, as well as explore new concepts such as a fashion show. Although I was not part of the organizing team, I participated as a model. Initially, I was hesitant to take part, but my interest in fashion encouraged me to join. Our team styled five outfits for five models using their own clothing. The leaders had a unique vision, choosing not only to organize a ramp walk but also to incorporate a skit to add meaning to our attire. I was eager to win as the concept was both creative and engaging, but we soon realized that we were the only participants in this category.
In the end, the experience was highly motivating, as we received some of the best reviews from teachers, students, and judges. The audience thoroughly enjoyed the show, and so did we. More importantly, this experience taught me the importance of preparation and how to plan and execute a show more professionally.
LO1- Identify own strengths and develop areas for growth
Through this process, I was able to recognize my strengths and areas for growth. I discovered that I excel at providing meaningful suggestions regarding outfit selection, ensuring that clothing, makeup, and hairstyles align with the character being portrayed. However, I struggled with stage fright. Walking as a model in front of a large audience made me self-conscious. I realized that my teammates were on stage with me, and after acknowledging my fear, I closed my eyes, took a deep breath, and walked onto the stage. This technique helped me feel more at ease. Overcoming this weakness was crucial because, as someone with creative ideas, I need the confidence to present them effectively. Identifying and addressing my weaknesses will allow me to grow and succeed in future endeavors.
LO2- Demonstrate that challenges have been undertaken, developing new skills in the process
One of the biggest challenges was having the confidence to wear the outfits and walk on stage not just walking, but acting as well. I had never played a role in a skit before, and knowing that the designers had placed their trust in me added pressure. If I made a mistake, their message could be lost. Unlike my previous fashion show experience, which took place in front of family, this event involved a larger and more critical audience. I feared being judged or compared to others, but I reminded myself to stay composed by closing my eyes, taking a deep breath, and walking with confidence. This approach helped me feel more self-assured.
One key takeaway from this experience was learning that fashion design extends beyond outfits it also involves makeup and hairstyling. Even with a perfect outfit, mismatched hair or makeup can compromise the intended message.
LO5- Demonstrate the skills and recognize the benefits of working collaboratively
I generally find teamwork easy, but I also prefer when my opinions are valued. In this fashion show, I was a model rather than a decision-maker, which made collaboration slightly difficult for me. My role was to follow directions rather than lead, and my input was not always considered. However, I recognized the importance of patience and compromise in teamwork. A successful fashion show requires mutual respect and consensus. If I had refused to wear an outfit due to a difference in opinion, the entire show could have been disrupted. This experience reinforced the importance of adaptability and effective collaboration, which I will carry forward into future group projects.
LO7- Recognize and consider the ethics of choices and actions
Performing in front of the entire school meant being mindful of ethical considerations. Our audience included teachers, students from grades 7 to 12, and parents. It was essential to ensure that our clothing choices were appropriate for the school setting while still aligning with the theme of the show. Additionally, we were cautious when designing our skit, ensuring that our content was respectful and did not offend any religion, race, or gender. Before this experience, I had not realized how much effort goes into ensuring appropriateness for an audience. This taught me that ethical considerations are an integral part of event planning and presentation.
CONCLUSION
This experience helped me grow both personally and creatively. I developed new skills in collaboration, adaptability, and self-confidence. Additionally, it challenged the audience’s perception of fashion shows, demonstrating that they can extend beyond simple ramp walks to incorporate meaningful storytelling. Moving forward, I will continue to apply these lessons to future projects, ensuring a balance of creativity and professionalism in all my endeavors.
