This past year, I took on the ambitious task of organizing a “Night Out” event for my school’s Grade 11 and 12 students. The event featured games, a DJ, a live band, and a sports tournament, aiming to provide a memorable experience that fostered community and connection among students. This project not only tested my organizational skills but also provided valuable insights into my strengths and areas for growth while demonstrating perseverance and commitment. This event had 4 other event coordinators apart from me.

Learning outcome 3: Initiating and Planning the CAS Experience

We decided to take the lead in organizing it, which involved meticulous planning and collaboration. We began by creating a project timeline, outlining tasks such as venue selection, budgeting, and coordinating activities.

a committee of volunteers from our grade, delegating responsibilities according to each member’s strengths. This collaboration allowed me to harness the diverse talents within our group, from marketing to logistics. We held weekly meetings to ensure everyone was on track, and I learned the importance of effective communication and teamwork in bringing a vision to life.

In the process, I discovered my strengths in event planning and leadership. However, I also identified areas for growth, particularly in conflict resolution. Especially when unexpected expenses arose. This experience highlighted the need for adaptability and proactive problem-solving, skills I knew I needed to develop further.

Learning outcome 1: Showing Perseverance and Commitment

As the date of the event approached, numerous challenges tested my perseverance. From securing the venue to coordinating schedules with the DJ and the band, each step presented its own obstacles. There were moments when it felt overwhelming—especially when we faced scheduling conflicts

Despite these setbacks, I remained committed to the vision of creating an unforgettable experience. I motivated my team to stay focused on our goals, encouraging open communication about any issues that arose. We brainstormed solutions together, ensuring everyone felt valued and included in the process.

Learning outcome 4: Reflection on Personal Growth

The Night Out event culminated in a night filled with laughter, music, and friendly competition, with students actively participating in games and the sports tournament. The positive feedback we received from attendees was immensely gratifying and reaffirmed the effort we had invested.

Reflecting on this experience, I realized how much I had grown in various aspects. I improved my organizational and leadership skills while gaining a deeper understanding of teamwork and collaboration. More importantly, I learned the value of perseverance in the face of adversity. Challenges became stepping stones rather than obstacles, and I emerged with a greater sense of resilience.

Additionally, I recognized the importance of celebrating collective achievements. The success of the Night Out was not solely my own; it was the result of teamwork and shared vision. This experience has inspired me to seek out future leadership opportunities, knowing that I can contribute meaningfully while continuing to develop my skills.

Learning outcome 7: Recognize and consider the ethics of choices and actions

Throughout the planning process, I also grappled with the ethical implications of our decisions. It was essential to ensure that our event was inclusive and accessible to all students. Additionally, we prioritized safety by adhering to school policies regarding events and ensuring proper supervision.

These considerations highlighted the importance of ethical leadership. I learned that organizing an event is not just about logistics; it’s also about creating a space where everyone feels welcome and valued. This understanding will influence my future endeavors, reminding me to prioritize inclusivity and ethical practices.

Organizing the Night Out for Grades 11-12 was an invaluable CAS project that pushed me beyond my comfort zone and allowed me to identify and develop my strengths. I learned to navigate challenges with perseverance and commitment, and I emerged with a greater appreciation for the power of collaboration. As I move forward, I am excited to apply these lessons to future projects, knowing that each experience is an opportunity for growth and learning.
