I recently had the exciting opportunity to participate in the (FSMUN) as a representative of Japan in the United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC). This experience not only deepened my understanding of global issues but also allowed me to engage with diverse perspectives and reflect on the ethical implications of international diplomacy.

LO1: Identify Own Strengths and Develop Areas for Growth

Participating in FSMUN allowed me to identify my strengths in research and public speaking. I was able to articulate Japan’s position clearly and engage in constructive debates with other delegates. However, I also recognized areas for growth, particularly in active listening and adaptability. In the heat of discussions, it was sometimes challenging to consider opposing viewpoints. To improve, I made a conscious effort to listen attentively to others, which ultimately enriched my contributions and helped foster more productive dialogues.

LO6: Engagement with Issues of Global Significance

As a representative of Japan in the UNHRC, I engaged with critical issues such as refugee rights, gender equality, and the protection of human rights worldwide. Researching Japan’s stance on these issues was enlightening, as I learned how historical, cultural, and political contexts shape a nation’s policies. During the sessions, I listened to various countries present their views, which broadened my understanding of global human rights challenges. This experience made me appreciate the complexities of international relations and the importance of cooperation in addressing significant global issues.

LO7: Recognise and Consider the Ethics of Choices and Actions

Throughout the conference, I was constantly reminded of the ethical dimensions of diplomacy. Representing Japan, I had to consider how my statements and decisions aligned with the country’s values and human rights commitments. It was crucial to advocate for policies that would positively impact vulnerable populations without compromising Japan’s international obligations. I reflected on the responsibilities that come with representing a country, recognizing the importance of integrity and accountability in all my actions.

Conclusion

My experience at FSMUN as the UNHRC representative for Japan was transformative. I engaged with significant global issues, recognized the ethical implications of my actions, and identified my strengths and areas for growth. This experience not only enhanced my understanding of international relations but also inspired me to continue advocating for human rights and social justice in my community.
