The annual Global Odyssey at school is a dynamic celebration of cultural discovery. This year, my journey evolved from simply appreciating culture to unexpectedly diving into entrepreneurship, ticking off several important IB CAS learning outcomes along the way! Together with two friends, we transitioned from casual bakers to small business owners, launching a dessert stall filled with homemade goodies.

LO 2: Demonstrate that challenges have been undertaken, developing new skills in the process.

We carefully planned our menu and, with an unexpected grasp of financial literacy, calculated costs and refined our business skills. We aimed for dishes that were simple to prepare, budget-friendly, and feasible for high schoolers. Overcoming challenges, we scoured the internet for easy-to-make recipes with locally accessible ingredients. To save costs, we adapted recipes, used ingredients that could serve multiple dishes, and kept experimenting to find the best balance.

LO 1: Identify your strengths and areas for growth.

We designed engaging posters to promote our baked goods, gaining confidence in self-expression. Through digital design, I discovered my ability to blend creativity with branding, drawing inspiration from larger brands and putting my unique spin on them. This newfound interest in logo-making led me to explore digital design in my free time, allowing me to further develop this skill.

LO 5: Demonstrate the skills and recognize the benefits of working collaboratively.

When the big day arrived, excitement and nervousness set in as we set up our tiny “bakery.” Once the crowd of students and teachers flooded in, our nerves eased, and we were greeted by a delightful mix of eager customers. Seeing them enjoy our creations was truly fulfilling. This experience also taught me the value of teamwork, as my friends and I worked together in a flour-covered kitchen, sharing laughter and making things happen.

LO 6: Demonstrate engagement with issues of global significance.

In addition to learning essential business skills like budgeting and planning, we developed a greater appreciation for the diverse culinary traditions from around the world. Through baking, we realized how important it is to measure ingredients precisely, especially in light of growing food waste concerns. To minimize waste, we ensured every ingredient was calculated accurately and any leftovers were distributed to those in need.

This experience wasn’t just another school event—it was a pivotal moment where I discovered skills I didn’t know I had. These talents might not have emerged without the opportunity to run a stall. Reflecting on this, I would attribute the “Thinker” learner profile to this experience, as it required critical and creative thinking. I tackled complex problems, considered different perspectives, and devised creative solutions.
