Community service is a programme that occurs every year at Fountainhead School where kids from various local government school students visit FS for 3 weekends.Over the course of 6 days these underprivileged students were taught skills like arts and crafts, dancing, frisbee, football, science, and ICT.As one of my CAS experiences i choose to volunteer with my peers to teach the students about the sport frisbee but as more helpers were available some who knew how to play basketball were shifted to teach a small group of children on how to play basketball. So i basically did shifts between both sports frisbee and basketball. In both the students learned something new which brought smiles on their faces and we had a full itinerary planned for them which included teaching time and fun activities that were planned for them to learn everything about the sport. On the first day we taught the students the basics of the sports, In frisbee every FS student was set up in a pair with the small children. The FS students started teaching them different throws and how to catch each throw, while in basketball we were teaching them basic principles of dribbling the ball.As we taught the students how to play we wanted them to enjoy and not be serious like it was some kind of coaching classes,at the end of the day we all just wanted the to learn something new and see the smiles and happiness on their faces while they play the sport leading to making out our weekend also happy and engaging.
Learning Outcomes:
LO 1:Identify Own Strengths And Develop Area For Growth
From our childhood to now we have always been playing some or the other sport and it has always been fun and relieving as a break from studies.Playing sports is not only fun but physically healthy too.So basically sports have been a important part of the human life, the importance of sports extends beyond just physical exercise. It plays a significant role in social and emotional development.Sports teaches children communication, teamwork, and cooperation while it also provides a outlet for stress and confined energy. So in basketball and frisbee i was able to teach them the skills because i was through with it and experienced in the sport. The basic skills like dribbling and passing were thing we used to do everyday in our PS sessions hence making us practiced and thorough. However, during the time we were teaching them the sports they grasped frisbee really well on the other hand in basketball they were struggling a little plus the group was a little mischievous leading to less learning and more enjoying.so there could have been more discipline while learning and the children they were very shy so to communicate to them while teaching the sport became a difficult situation. At the end of the programme even if they didn’t know the sport really well cause they were just introduced to it,we still let them play a match which was very violent so had to be stopped.
LO 2:Demonstrate The Challenges Have Been Undertaken,Developing New skills
As learning a new sport can be overwhelming all together because of all the new rules and new things that were taught had to be remembered, this would cause some mischief between the students and some time being wasted as well.So we tried making the sport easier to teach and more fun to play rather than just dribbling the ball at just one place we made them play different games where these skills came in use and sometimes when they even used to do mischief in the games we used to play,we had to scold them a little but no one had any bad intention against them it’s just that we wanted them to enjoy the game and learn. As a person due to this community service programme i have developed my communication skills, teaching skills.and patience. While teaching these students i was able to communicate with them thoroughly due to my mother tongue being Gujrati but still there were terms that even i did not know what were called in gujarati and then was explained by showing it to them.Basketball is a sport i have been playing for 2 years now but still i never had the confidence to teach someone how to play it and this programme helped me nurture these kids and teach them the sport of basketball. The students were slow learners which helped develop my patience a lot and helped me observe each and every student and analyze them playing.
LO 4:Show Perseverance And Commitment In CAS Experience
Community service was a whole 6 day programme, basically 3 weekends. It was easy for me to attend every day as I am already an early riser,so waking up early and going to school to teach these underprivileged kids was not a hard task for me.Though community service did take a lot of weekend time which should have been utilized to study and used for submissions of various subjects. However due to my commitment to this workshop i was able to better my time management skills and be more organized and have a schedule and a priority list so i know what to complete after spending this much time at the programme. It was hard to teach the students the sports but my dedication and passion towards the sport helped me overcome the toughness of teaching the sport.
LO 5:Demonstrate The Skills And Benefits Of Working Collaboratively
As the programme was going on me and my peers worked collaboratively to teach the students basketball and frisbee. We all taught the same thing and practiced it in pairs so each student had its own teacher and the teachers whole attention was on that student only.Working together and teaching these students the sport of basketball was fun and making the sport interesting for the students and bringing the joy on their faces was worth it.
LO 6:Engagement Of Issues With Global Significance
Quality Education is extremely important and remains a global challenge. Many face inadequate access to well-trained teachers, modern resources, and updated curriculum. In developing countries, limited infrastructure and financial constraints hinder the delivery of effective education.Quality Education is not only studies but physical activities including. What i learned from the students that came from the government schools that they didn’t even know there was a sport named basketball. They were so happy that they had learnt a new sport while in surat frisbee is quite famous and is being played in lot of government schools hence some students were familiar with the sport and showed their skills during games.
LO 7:Recognize And Consider The Ethics Of Choices And Actions
Through community service, I recognized the ethical responsibility of creating an inclusive environment for underprivileged students. Our choices in organizing activities like sports and arts directly impacted their experience. This taught me the importance of equity, respect, and thoughtful action in fostering meaningful connections and addressing social inequalities.
Overall,The community service programme was a great experience for me as i Taught students how to play basketball and frisbee, learned some skills myself, and enjoyed a lot in playing with these children and seeing the smiles on their faces as they played was outstanding and if i am given the opportunity to do community service again i would surely volunteer to do everything again. The learner profiles catered in this CAS experience are communicator and knowledgeable.
