As a passionate table tennis player, I eagerly embraced the opportunity to represent my school in the annual inter-school competition. Little did I realize that this event would become a journey of self-discovery, perseverance, and skill development that extended far beyond my gameplay. Here’s how this CAS experience allowed me to grow in various areas:
L1: Identify Own Strengths and Develop Areas for Growth
At the outset, I believed my strengths lay in my quick footwork and agility on the table. However, I soon realized that my mental game required improvement. Early-round errors and close losses unsettled me, affecting my performance. Recognizing this weakness prompted me to focus on strategies like positive self-talk and emotional regulation, which significantly improved my mindset as the tournament progressed.
Conversely, I discovered the value of my dedication and coachability, traits I had previously overlooked. My commitment to rigorous training and openness to my coach’s feedback enabled me to make measurable progress with each round. Acknowledging these strengths boosted my confidence and reinforced my determination to continue improving.
L2: Demonstrate That Challenges Have Been Undertaken, Developing New Skills
While table tennis was the focal point, the competition challenged me in ways that extended beyond the game itself. Competing in a mixed team event required me to develop coordination strategies and devise tactics with unfamiliar teammates on the spot. This tested my communication, leadership, and psychological skills, particularly trust and synchronization.
Additionally, representing my school demanded professionalism on and off the court. Whether interacting with opponents, referees, or spectators, I had to refine my sportsmanship, manners, and public speaking skills. These lessons in professionalism taught me how to present myself confidently and respectfully, skills that will undoubtedly benefit me in future endeavors.
L4: Show Perseverance and Commitment in CAS Experience
The road to success in the tournament was filled with challenges that tested my resilience. A sudden ankle injury during the quarterfinals left me sidelined for hours with medical attention. Despite the discomfort, I pushed through and returned to deliver a determined comeback performance.
Other obstacles included controversial line calls and questionable referee decisions that could have discouraged my team and me. Instead, we maintained our focus and demonstrated resilience, channeling our energy into pressuring our opponents. This perseverance ultimately led to a hard-earned tournament victory for our school.
L7: Recognize and Consider the Ethics of Choices and Actions
Throughout the tournament, ethical decision-making was central to my experience. In one instance, my opponent’s serve was clearly out, but the referee missed it. I faced a dilemma: challenge the call or let it stand. Choosing fairness and sportsmanship, I refrained from contesting the call to uphold the spirit of the game.
As a school representative, I also understood that my behavior reflected on my institution. I prioritized respectful interactions with opponents, referees, and other participants, even during challenging moments. By acting ethically, I aimed to demonstrate integrity and reinforce the importance of honesty and respect in competitive environments.
Reflection
Looking back, this CAS experience was about more than just winning matches. It highlighted areas for growth, such as enhancing my mental toughness and composure under pressure. It pushed me out of my comfort zone to develop new skills, improving my performance as both an athlete and a teammate. Above all, it was a testament to the power of dedication, which I had to exhibit repeatedly when facing adversity. I’m excited to carry these lessons forward as I prepare for my next CAS challenge!
