Kalakriti was an inter-school art competition hosted by our school, featuring a rich array of artistic events such as dance, visual arts, music, drama, vocals, rangoli, and more. The event showcased the incredible talent of young participants and highlighted their potential when given the right opportunities. I volunteered as the event photographer, covering the competition across various locations in the school. My role was not just to take photos but to capture the spirit, energy, and creativity of the event for future reference and our school’s social media platforms. This experience gave me a deeper appreciation for the diverse forms of art and allowed me to document memorable moments that celebrated the transformative power of creativity.

LO1: Identify Own Strengths and Develop Areas for Growth

Volunteering as the photographer for Kalakriti helped me identify both my strengths and areas for improvement. One of my key strengths was my ability to remain focused and calm in the midst of a chaotic environment. This allowed me to capture candid moments and intricate details with precision, even when the energy around me was frantic.

However, I also realized areas where I could grow, particularly in time management. At times, I became too fixated on capturing the perfect shot, which caused me to miss other important moments of the event. Moving forward, I aim to strike a balance between paying attention to details and maintaining flexibility and efficiency in my work.

LO2: Demonstrating Challenges Undertaken and Developing New Skills

Photographing a live event like Kalakriti presented unique challenges that pushed me out of my comfort zone. The performances required constant vigilance to ensure I captured the most critical moments. Adjusting my camera settings on the fly to adapt to changes in lighting and movement was a skill I had to hone quickly.

Navigating through large crowds while maintaining composure and focus added to the difficulty, as did the need to find the best angles amidst the fast-paced nature of the event. This experience taught me how to stay alert, think creatively under pressure, and tell a cohesive story through my images. It also enhanced my technical skills in event photography, such as framing, lighting, and capturing emotions.

LO3: Initiate and Plan a CAS Experience

Before Kalakriti began, I took the initiative to plan my role as the event photographer. I met with the event organizers beforehand to understand the schedule, key performances, and specific moments they wanted captured. Based on this information, I created a detailed shot list that included candid shots of the audience, behind-the-scenes moments, and highlights from each performance.

I also mapped out the venue to identify the best angles and shooting spots for the various stages and activities. This pre-planning ensured that I was well-prepared for the fast-paced environment and allowed me to move seamlessly from one location to another without missing any significant moments.

LO4: Show Perseverance and Commitment in CAS Experience

The long hours and physical demands of photographing Kalakriti tested my perseverance and commitment. Constantly moving around the venue with a camera in hand, staying focused for extended periods, and remaining mentally sharp were all challenges I had to overcome.

Despite moments of exhaustion, I stayed committed to my role and worked diligently to deliver a collection of photos that truly reflected the vibrancy and essence of Kalakriti. Looking back, I take pride in how I pushed through the challenges, stayed motivated, and fulfilled my responsibilities with dedication.

LO5: Demonstrate Skills and Benefits of Working Collaboratively

While photography is often seen as a solitary task, collaboration played a crucial role in my success at Kalakriti. I worked closely with the event coordinators, who provided valuable input about the program flow and the most important moments to capture.

I also coordinated with other photographers to ensure comprehensive coverage of the event without overlapping. This teamwork ensured that every aspect of Kalakriti was well-documented, and it reinforced the importance of communication, collaboration, and shared responsibility in achieving a common goal.

Conclusion

Photographing Kalakriti was much more than a simple task with a camera—it was a journey of personal growth, learning, and creative expression. The experience taught me how to handle pressure, work collaboratively, and push my limits in ways I never thought possible. It also sharpened my photography skills and gave me a platform to advocate for the importance of art and education.
