Planning and organizing events has always been something I enjoy, and I wanted to challenge myself by taking on a leadership role in a large-scale school event. As part of the games and activities department for my senior’s farewell, I was responsible for designing engaging activities, ensuring smooth execution, and collaborating with my peers to create a memorable experience for our seniors. This CAS experience allowed me to enhance my organizational and leadership skills while developing creativity and teamwork.

Learner Profile Attributes Developed

• Communicator – I had to effectively communicate with different teams, ensuring that everyone was aligned with the schedule and expectations.
• Thinker – Designing games that were both engaging and suitable for a large audience required careful consideration and problem-solving.
• Caring – The farewell was a sentimental event, and I ensured that the activities reflected appreciation and gratitude toward our seniors.

Learning Outcome 1: Identify Own Strengths and Develop Areas for Growth

One of my strengths that I identified through this experience was my ability to think on my feet and make quick decisions. During the event, unforeseen challenges arose, such as last-minute changes to the schedule, which I managed efficiently. However, I realized that time management was an area I needed to improve. Balancing multiple responsibilities while ensuring that each aspect of the games and activities was well-organized was a challenge. Through this, I developed better planning strategies by creating detailed schedules and contingency plans to manage time more effectively in future projects.

Learning Outcome 2: Demonstrate That Challenges Have Been Undertaken, Developing New Skills in the Process

Taking the lead in an event of this scale was a challenge in itself. One major challenge was ensuring engagement among all attendees, as some students were initially hesitant to participate in the games. To overcome this, I had to develop public speaking and persuasion skills, encouraging students to get involved through interactive announcements and ice-breakers. Additionally, I learned to adapt activities on the spot based on the audience’s response, which helped in keeping the energy high throughout the event.

Learning Outcome 5: Demonstrate the Skills and Recognize the Benefits of Working Collaboratively

This CAS experience emphasized the importance of teamwork. Organizing an event required collaboration with various departments, from logistics to decorations, and I had to ensure that the games and activities aligned with the overall theme. By working closely with my peers, I learned to delegate tasks effectively, trust my team members, and resolve conflicts constructively. The experience reinforced that a well-coordinated team leads to a successful outcome, and mutual support was key in executing a seamless event.

Reflection

This experience was both rewarding and educational. Not only did I improve my leadership, communication, and event management skills, but I also learned how to handle stress, make quick decisions, and collaborate efficiently. Seeing the seniors enjoy the event and hearing their appreciation was incredibly fulfilling. Moving forward, I aim to continue developing my time management and adaptability skills in future leadership roles, ensuring that I can handle even larger events with greater ease.

Through this CAS experience, I was able to make a meaningful contribution to my school community while gaining valuable skills that will benefit me beyond the IB program.
