I have a strong interest in social work and education, and I wanted to make a direct impact on reducing education inequality among children. As part of my CAS service experience, I worked with underprivileged students who visited our school, guiding them through learning activities and extracurricular engagement over three consecutive weekends. My goal was to enhance their learning opportunities, encourage their interests, and provide them with a positive environment for personal growth.

This CAS experience helped me develop several learner profile attributes while addressing key UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). By taking a caring approach, I ensured that the students felt welcomed and valued, demonstrating empathy and commitment to their well-being. As a communicator, I effectively conveyed concepts and instructions while keeping the students engaged. Additionally, I became more reflective by evaluating my methods and identifying ways to enhance the learning experience. These efforts aligned with No Poverty (SDG 1), as education plays a vital role in breaking poverty cycles, Quality Education (SDG 4), by promoting inclusive and equitable learning, and Reducing Inequality (SDG 10), by providing opportunities for underprivileged students to engage in educational activities that they might not otherwise access.

Learning Outcome 6: Engagement with Issues of Global Significance

Education inequality is a major global concern, and many children lack access to quality learning experiences. By engaging in this service, I directly addressed this issue on a local level, aiming to empower students with knowledge and skills. This experience helped me understand the broader systemic challenges that limit educational access and reinforced the importance of advocating for equal learning opportunities.

Learning Outcome 7: Recognize and Consider the Ethics of Choices and Actions

Working with underprivileged students required me to be mindful of ethical considerations, such as cultural sensitivity and respectful engagement. I had to ensure that my approach was non-patronizing and genuinely beneficial, fostering an environment where students felt valued and capable. This experience deepened my understanding of responsible social work and the ethical implications of community engagement.

Learning Outcome 5: Demonstrate the Skills and Recognize the Benefits of Working Collaboratively

Teaching and organizing activities required teamwork with fellow volunteers. By collaborating, we effectively divided responsibilities, supported one another, and ensured that each student received personalized attention. This experience reinforced the importance of shared responsibility and cooperation in making a meaningful impact.

Learning Outcome 2: Demonstrate That Challenges Have Been Undertaken, Developing New Skills in the Process

One of the biggest challenges was maintaining the students’ engagement and adapting to different learning styles. Some students required more hands-on activities, while others responded better to verbal explanations. Through this experience, I developed patience, adaptability, and the ability to create interactive lesson plans that catered to diverse needs.

This community service experience was deeply fulfilling and transformative. Seeing the students’ enthusiasm and progress reaffirmed my passion for education and social work. I developed leadership, problem-solving, and communication skills while reinforcing my commitment to making education more accessible. Moving forward, I plan to continue advocating for educational equity and seek out further opportunities to contribute to this cause.
