Global Odyssey is an annual business management and economics event hosted around the theme of “fun, food, and fashion.” This event serves as a platform to learn business operations, financial management, and teamwork in a practical, engaging way. The theme for our batch was Cherry Blossom, which influenced our branding, stall decorations, and product choices. As a Business Management student, I joined a team responsible for running a food stall, alongside students from Economics, where we explored the principles of supply and demand, cost analysis, and customer engagement.

Learner Profile Attributes Developed

Through this experience, I developed several key IB learner profile attributes:

• Communicator: Engaging with customers, marketing our products, and coordinating effectively with my team required strong communication skills.
• Thinker: I applied critical thinking to pricing strategies, inventory management, and balancing demand with available resources.
• Risk-Taker: Setting up a stall and handling real-time sales and customer feedback required me to step out of my comfort zone and embrace challenges.

Learning Outcome 1: Identify Own Strengths and Develop Areas for Growth

One of my strengths in this experience was organization and financial management. I helped track sales, calculate profits, and ensure that we maintained a proper cost-revenue balance. However, an area for growth I identified was quick decision-making under pressure. When we ran low on certain items, I had to think fast about possible alternatives to keep customers engaged and maintain sales momentum.

Learning Outcome 2: Demonstrate That Challenges Have Been Undertaken, Developing New Skills in the Process

Running a food stall required learning basic culinary skills, customer handling, and marketing tactics. A major challenge we faced was inventory management—predicting how much food to prepare without overproducing or running out early. We also had to manage time efficiently, as preparing food from scratch took longer than expected, requiring us to adjust our workflow dynamically.

Learning Outcome 3: Demonstrate How to Initiate and Plan a CAS Experience

From the initial brainstorming of menu items to setting up and executing the stall, I actively participated in the planning and logistics of our business. We had to decide on food options, determine pricing strategies, market our stall to attract customers, and ensure smooth operations throughout the event. This experience reinforced my understanding of business planning and execution.

Learning Outcome 5: Demonstrate the Skills and Recognize the Benefits of Working Collaboratively

Collaboration was crucial in managing our stall successfully. We divided tasks, such as preparing food, managing sales, interacting with customers, and promoting our stall. Effective teamwork allowed us to maintain efficiency and create a positive atmosphere that encouraged more customers to visit.

Future Applications and Skill Development

Participating in Global Odyssey has provided me with valuable insights into business operations, financial management, and teamwork. The experience has enhanced my ability to plan, execute, and adapt strategies, which will be highly beneficial in future entrepreneurial or management roles. Additionally, it has strengthened my problem-solving and interpersonal skills, preparing me for real-world business challenges.

Reflection

Overall, Global Odyssey was a transformative experience that blended academic knowledge with hands-on application. Overcoming challenges such as managing inventory, handling high demand, and making quick business decisions pushed me to grow as a learner and leader. This experience has inspired me to explore further opportunities in business management and economics while continuing to refine my skills in strategic thinking, leadership, and adaptability.
