Animal Shelter Experience

The Animal Shelter program was conducted outside school at the Nature Club every weekend. I have always been afraid of animals and never had the chance to confront this fear. However, the opportunity to care for and feed animals at the Nature Club helped me gradually overcome it. During this experience, our responsibilities included feeding animals and birds, cleaning pigeon cages, and carefully preparing food by chopping vegetables.

LO 1: Identifying Strengths and Areas for Growth

On the first day, I was quite hesitant because of my fear of animals. Our tasks were divided among the participants, including chopping vegetables, cleaning water bowls, and feeding the animals on time. When I was assigned to enter the cages to feed them, I was extremely nervous since I had never done anything like that before. Initially, I wasn’t prepared to step inside, but I knew that I had to develop the courage to complete my task confidently. While it seemed daunting at first, once I entered one cage, it became easier to step into others. With the guidance of a supervisor, I gradually overcame my fear of animals by interacting with them directly.

LO 4: Perseverance and Commitment in CAS Experience

Our commitment to this experience was evident in how we managed to complete our two-hour sessions each weekend despite our busy academic schedules. Balancing these sessions alongside our submission deadlines and other coursework required careful time management and dedication. This experience reinforced the importance of perseverance, showing us how staying committed to a cause, even when faced with challenges, fosters a sense of responsibility and compassion for animals in need.

LO 5: Skills and Benefits of Working Collaboratively

Teamwork played a crucial role in ensuring the efficiency of our tasks at the animal shelter. Responsibilities such as chopping vegetables, cleaning cages, and refilling water and food containers required coordination and communication among team members. By dividing tasks and working toward a shared goal, we were able to complete our duties more effectively and efficiently. This experience highlighted the importance of collaboration in achieving meaningful results.

LO 6: Engagement with Global Issues of Significance

This experience also provided insight into a broader global issue—animal welfare and conservation, which aligns with the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals. Many of the rescued animals at the shelter had suffered mistreatment due to human actions, highlighting the urgent need for greater awareness and ethical treatment of animals. Witnessing cases of animals being harmed unjustly reinforced the importance of empathy, kindness, and respect for all living beings.

Conclusion

Overall, our CAS experience at the animal shelter was an enriching journey of responsibility, empathy, and teamwork. Not only did we contribute to the well-being of stray and rescued animals, but we also developed a deeper understanding of compassion and our role in making a positive impact on the world around us.
