Animal Shelter Experience (Activity & Service)

I have always loved animals but never had the opportunity to take care of one. This experience allowed me to engage directly in their care by feeding them, cleaning their cages, and ensuring their well-being. I was able to interact with a variety of animals, hear their stories, and contribute to their welfare. Among the tasks I performed were cutting vegetables for feeding, cleaning dog cages and bowls, maintaining bird enclosures, and even feeding exotic animals such as iguanas, owls, snakes, and turtles.

LO2
One of the biggest challenges during this experience was adjusting to the physical demands of working at the shelter. Cleaning cages, feeding animals, and maintaining hygiene required endurance, patience, and attention to detail. Additionally, working with exotic animals was intimidating at first, as I had never interacted with certain species before. Over time, I developed confidence in handling different animals and learned the proper methods for feeding and caring for them. This experience also helped me improve my ability to work in unfamiliar environments, adapt quickly, and follow necessary precautions when dealing with rescue animals.

LO4

Completing this experience required dedication, as we had to attend four shelter sessions, each lasting two hours. Making time for these sessions on busy weekends, while managing academic deadlines and personal commitments, was a challenge. However, I remained committed to attending and contributing my efforts consistently. This experience reinforced the importance of balancing responsibilities and making time for meaningful service work despite a hectic schedule.

LO6 & LO7

Through this experience, we actively worked toward the global issue of Life on Land by helping rescue animals heal and find a safe environment. Each of these animals had a unique background, but all of them suffered due to human actions. This realization forced me to reflect on how our choices impact the ecosystem and the creatures that share our world. Even when we act with good intentions, our actions can sometimes have unintended negative consequences. This experience deepened my understanding of ethical responsibility and encouraged me to make more conscious decisions that support animal welfare and environmental sustainability.

Skills Developed
Caring – This experience required not only physical care for the animals but also emotional empathy and understanding of their struggles.

Reflective – Learning the backstories of these animals made me reflect on how human actions influence ecosystems and how we can work towards making more ethical and responsible choices.

Conclusion

This experience was deeply meaningful, as it allowed me to connect with animals, contribute to their well-being, and develop essential skills such as adaptability, responsibility, and empathy. It reinforced my passion for animal welfare and the importance of making ethical choices that support Life on Land.
