CAS Reflection: Representing Akhilesh Yadav in the Lok Sabha Simulation

For my CAS experience, I had the opportunity to participate in a Lok Sabha simulation, where I took on the role of Akhilesh Yadav, the former Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh and current leader of the Samajwadi Party. This experience allowed me to explore my interests in Indian politics, legislative processes, and public policy, while also developing important skills that align with several of the CAS learning outcomes.

Learning Outcome 1: Identify own strengths and develop areas for growth
Stepping into the role of Akhilesh Yadav, a prominent political figure, was a significant challenge for me. As someone with a keen interest in politics, I recognized my strengths in research, critical thinking, and public speaking. However, I also identified areas for growth, such as improving my ability to engage in persuasive rhetoric, negotiate effectively, and adapt to the dynamic nature of parliamentary debates.

Learning Outcome 2: Demonstrate that challenges have been undertaken, developing new skills in the process
The Lok Sabha simulation presented me with numerous challenges, from thoroughly understanding Akhilesh Yadav’s political ideology and policy positions to effectively representing his interests in the legislative proceedings. These tasks required me to develop new skills, such as strategic thinking, negotiation tactics, and the ability to think on my feet during heated debates. The experience of navigating the complex web of Indian politics and advocating for my assigned party’s interests was particularly rewarding as it allowed me to expand my knowledge and understanding of the country’s political landscape.

Learning Outcome 3: Demonstrate how to initiate and plan a CAS experience
In the weeks leading up to the Lok Sabha simulation, I worked closely with my fellow participants to plan and organize our respective roles and strategies. This involved coordinating research, drafting position papers, and rehearsing our speaking and negotiation tactics. The planning process required effective communication, time management, and a willingness to collaborate with my peers to ensure a successful outcome.

Learning Outcome 4: Show commitment to and perseverance in CAS experiences
Participating in the Lok Sabha simulation was a significant time commitment, as it involved extensive preparation and active engagement throughout the entire experience. Despite the challenges and occasional setbacks, I remained dedicated to the experience and persevered through the various tasks and responsibilities. This commitment allowed me to fully immerse myself in the simulation and maximize the learning and growth opportunities it provided.

Overall, my involvement in the Lok Sabha simulation was a transformative CAS experience that allowed me to develop new skills, challenge myself, and gain a deeper understanding of Indian politics and legislative processes. The experience has not only enriched my academic and personal growth but has also inspired me to continue seeking out opportunities to engage with issues of global significance and contribute to positive change in the world.
