Duration : 5th August to 20th August 

Community Service where students from different small school around FS, come on every weekend to spend time with FS students. Where they go through varies activities such as Basketball, Art and Craft, Dance, Football, ICT, Science Project.

As a volunteer in basketball, we were a group of five, and each student taught different techniques to the underprivileged students. On the first weekend, the students were a bit nervous and experienced a communication gap. To ensure this didn’t persist, I used to ask them in which language they were comfortable communicating. Most of the time, I communicated with them in Hindi and taught them how to hold the ball as if they were 2 years old. I made sure they didn’t get bored while learning the sport with discipline. On the other weekend, the students recognised us and greeted us with smiles on their faces. That made our day.

LO 4 – Show commitment to and perseverance in CAS experience 

The commitment required for this program involved showing up early every weekend and teaching students the best ways to play basketball. Waking up early was the biggest challenge for me since I tend to be a night owl and don’t usually prefer early mornings. However, for this program, I don’t know where I found the energy to wake up early, come to school on Sundays, and teach underprivileged kids. It might be from there huge smiles which motivated me to go school even on weekends.

LO 5 – Demonstrate the skills and recognise the benefits of working collaboratively 

Teamwork was the most significant challenge for us, as there were many FS volunteers, each with their own thoughts on how to teach them. However, working collaboratively transformed us into a team with a common goal teaching basketball to underprivileged students within a few days. Instead of arguing amongst ourselves, we decided to teach together rather than individually. If any mistakes were made by one FS volunteer, another FS Volunteer would step in to correct them.

LO 7 – Recognise and consider the ethics of choices and actions 

Through various incidents, I have come to realize that having a privileged background doesn’t mean everyone else does. Many students don’t have the same opportunities I have. Volunteering in this program opened my eyes to how we should behave when we come from a more privileged background and how to stay happy even when we don’t have any type of luxury.
