I have always indulged myself in playing sports and doing fitness to keep myself active. I used to play Athletics, but then I wanted to play a team sport so switching to Basketball only sounded like an option. Since I started playing Basketball last year, I was still a beginner and there were several skills which I lacked compared to my peers because mostly in grade 11 -12 , there are students who have been playing baskteball from a long time. So HDP PS was a time where I got to upskill and develop myself in baskteball.
LO1 – Identify own strengths and develop areas for growth.
While playing this sport, I realised that despite having a good speed, i did lack the endurance. Despite sharpening the skills during practice, I wasnt able to implement it during matches. Such areas of growth pushed me to practice harder, get constant feedback from my coaches during and after the matches. To implement, we had our interhouse competition during PS in late January where I realised that I had developed a good game sense, and more endurance and good skills compared to what i was in the beginning of the year, however there were many flaws in my game which continues to push me to develop araes for growth.
LO2 – Demonstrate that challenges have been undertaken, developing new skills
i was never able to implement lap shots during match, somehow I used to get frightened or mistep causing to fail while going for a drive- in. Also, because I didn’t know anyone else apart from our grade, it was difficult for to me communicate for passes during practice matches. This became a barrier to my growth as due to lack of communciation, I couldn’t pass or get passes at the right time when my position could have helped the team score basket. Slowly and gradually, by giving myself time and opportunity, I tried implementing drive- ins and there were ten times where I was failing but givng it a shot allowed me to pass it atleast once. hence i relaised how just trying could enhance my practice of lap shots. To overcome my communication fear, I just started calling out for passes with time. It allowed me to push myself out of my comfort zone and learn to play basketball more effectively.
LO5 – Demonstrate skills and benefits of working collaboratively.
This line of inquiry was highly applicable during this CAS experience as I have always played individual sports; Athletics so developing a game sense where you play according to your teammates and as per opposite teams, was a skill to be developed. It required highly collaborative skills which were developed by team drills or set plays, in which we not only enhanced our skills for basketball individually but were also trained to play together as a team when there was a particular offense or defense to be set by us.
