The gavel strikes, signaling the start of another session, and a familiar wave of anticipation washes over me. This year’s FSMUN presented a unique challenge: representing France in the midst of ongoing negotiations surrounding the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), also known as the Iran nuclear deal. While time constraints due to a prior CAS trip limited my preparation in terms of extensive speeches, the experience proved much invaluable in other ways.

Researching Under Pressure:

The news cycle surrounding the JCPOA can be relentless. With limited time, I honed my research skills, focusing on extracting key points from those credible sources like the French Ministry of Foreign Affairs website and official transcripts of past negotiations. This rapidfire research strategy allowed me to grasp the complexities of the issue and formulate France’s position on critical matters.

Strategic Maneuvering:

Where extensive speeches were limited, I excelled in my preparedness for motions. Having a firm understanding of France’s stance on the JCPOA’s core elements (nuclear enrichment, inspections, sanctions relief) allowed me to participate strategically. By anticipating potential motions and formulating strong arguments beforehand, I was able to effectively voice France’s concerns and advocate for a solution that upholds global security.

The Power of Collaboration:

The true value of MUN lies in the exchange of ideas and collaborative efforts. Despite limited speaking time, I actively participated in caucuses with other delegates. By sharing perspectives and formulating joint amendments to proposed resolutions, we were able to represent a more unified international front. This collaborative spirit, a cornerstone of the JCPOA itself, proved to be a valuable takeaway.

A Learning Experience:

While an award might not have been part of this MUN experience, the skills I honed are far more valuable. The time constraints pushed me to become a more resourceful researcher, a strategic participant, and a collaborative team player. These are all qualities that will serve me well in future endeavors, both academic and professional.

The Road Ahead:

The future of the JCPOA remains uncertain. However, my experience at the FSMUN has instilled in me the importance of diplomacy, open communication, and a commitment to finding common ground. As we navigate this complex international issue, these are the tools we must employ to ensure global security.
