Bal mela, a daylong event that our school organised in February, gave us students the chance to teach kids from neighbouring government schools in a variety of activities. I volunteered to lead a football coaching session, excited to share my passion for the sport and contribute to the community.
L2. Demonstrate that challenges have been undertaken, developing new skills
Even though I was confident in my football abilities, there were particular difficulties when it came to teaching a group of young kids that I had never met before. I have to immediately modify my teaching strategies to fit in with various age and ability levels. Since some of the kids had never played football before, I had to start them off with drills that focused on dribbling and passing.
I included entertaining games and activities in the session to keep the kids interested and motivated. Additionally, I had to develop my patience and encouraging skills because many of the kids struggled with language or had low self-esteem.
By overcoming these obstacles, I was able to gain new leadership, flexibility, and communication abilities. I gained knowledge on how to deconstruct difficult ideas, interpret nonverbal clues, and establish a welcoming environment for learning.
L5. Demonstrate skills and benefits of working collaboratively
Cooperation and teamwork were necessary for planning and carrying out the football coaching session. I collaborated extensively with my classmates, delegating tasks like group planning, equipment management, and demonstration support. In order to make sure the kids had a seamless and secure experience, we also worked with the government school personnel and the bal mela organisers.
By means of this cooperative endeavour, I personally encountered the advantages of utilising varied abilities and viewpoints. Our coaching session was made better overall because of the distinct ideas and strengths that my classmates contributed to the discussion. We gained knowledge on how to delegate tasks, communicate clearly, and help one another reach our shared objective.
L6. Engagement with issues of global significance
By taking part in the bal mela, I was able to interact with global concerns, including those pertaining to impoverished communities’ access to sports and education. Since many of the kids we worked with were from low-income families, they weren’t exposed to extracurricular activities or organised sports.
We wanted to teach them a new sport and instill in them a love of physical activity, collaboration, and healthy competition. To that end, we designed an entertaining and engaging football coaching session. Sports can be an effective instrument for fostering social inclusion, self-improvement, and confidence-building.
In addition, by talking with parents and personnel at government schools, I was able to learn more about the difficulties these communities confront, including a lack of infrastructure, resources, and chances for holistic development.
In conclusion, I would say that having the opportunity to coach football at the bal mela was both fulfilling and enlightening. It pushed me to learn new leadership, communication, and teaching techniques and emphasised the advantages of cooperation and teamwork. Most importantly, it gave me the chance to discuss the bigger picture of giving impoverished kids access to high-quality education and opportunities, which served as a reminder of the power committed people and organisations have to build a more just and inclusive society.
