On February 24, 2024, I had the chance to volunteer at Bal Mela, where I, along with two friends, facilitated a basketball game. This was my first time interacting with so many childres of diverse backgrounds, the day taught me many valuable lessons.
LO6 – Engagement with issues of global significance.
The event went beyond mere entertainment; it aimed to tackle significant global issues like inequality and access to education and play. The children we worked with hailed from underprivileged communities with few recreational opportunities. Participating in Bal Mela allowed me to contribute to a wider dialogue on children’s rights to play and the necessity of inclusive environments for their growth and development.
LO7 – Recognise and consider the ethics of choices and actions
At the event, I was tasked with getting the children to play basketball. Initially, this appeared to be an easy job, but I soon understood that ethical considerations were crucial in how we handled the activity. The children came from various socioeconomic backgrounds, so we needed to be conscious of our behavior and communication. It was vital to treat each child equally, ensuring that everyone had an opportunity to participate, regardless of their physical abilities or skill levels.
