August 2023 was a colorful month when our school started a great project: community service programs aimed at closing the educational gap for the less fortunate. The curriculum was designed to transmit a variety of skill sets, from information and communication technology (ICT) to interactive sports like basketball, football, and frisbee.

I decided to offer my efforts to teaching science since I am naturally drawn to its wonders. I am fascinated by science because of its complex ideas and the fundamental ideas that underpin everything in the universe. The science projects we worked on were intended to shed light on fundamental chemical ideas, the workings of basic devices, and the riddles surrounding density. The kids developed a sense of wonder and interest about the world around them as a result of the rewarding experience.

Learning outcome 4: Show perseverance and commitment in CAS experience

This community service project required a significant effort. It needs persistence in addition to time commitment to teach for three weekends in a row for about three hours a day. Another issue was explaining scientific ideas to people who were not familiar with the language of science; this required constant dedication to close the comprehension gap.

Learning outcome 5: Demonstrate skills and benefits of working collaboratively

We found that splitting up the teaching assignments amongst us was a crucial tactic to guarantee success. We worked together to create small groups of four or five people, each of whom was given a volunteer monitor. By taking this strategy, we were able to maximize the impact of our efforts by creating a more personalized and dynamic learning environment. In order to further encourage cooperation, some groups were even granted the luxury of having two volunteers.

Our community service project was carried out in a way that was highly ethical. A careful balance between seasoned and inexperienced volunteers was maintained in each group through the meticulous planning of the volunteer distribution. The goal of this moral decision-making process was to preserve a peaceful and productive learning environment.

I noticed that, according to the learner profile, I was developing as a communicator during this fascinating CAS experience. Speaking with impoverished pupils forced me to modify my communication approach, taking into account their viewpoints and adjusting my vocabulary to guarantee understanding. This improved my capacity to communicate difficult concepts clearly and helped us develop a stronger bond with the community we were serving.
