GDGIS MUN 4.0- Activity,Service

The 3 day Model United Nations Conference was the 4th edition hosted by the GD Goenka International school, which hosted 350+ delegates participating across India, with 8 different committees.

In the 3 day Model UN conference, from 4th to 6th August 2023, I was invited as an executive board member, wherein I had to moderate the United Nations Security Council committee. As an Chair of the committee, I had to conduct training sessions with the delegates, run and lead the committee’s preceding and guide the delegates for the same. This was my 4th experience of chairing a committee, but this time it was a whole new experience as I had 45+ delegates in my committee and most of the delegates were first timers who had no experience about MUN’s and how they function. This experience was not just a new experience, but was also a new challenge for me to tackle, as the agenda of my committee was, “The question of nuclear weapons in North Korea,” and my committee, being a first timer committee, struggled initially to discuss the topic. Additionally, the delegate of North Korea who had a significant importance in the agenda wasn’t available in the conference which added a hurdle for me as an executive board member. Despite having an experience in chairing committees, this experience taught me several new things, and helped me sharpen my problem-solving skills to a greater extent. I chose to be a part of this experience, as the 4th edition of the GDGIS MUN was the biggest MUN hosted in South Gujarat, which not just helped me in building my MUN experience better, but also helped me in building my intrapersonal and social skills.

LOA 2- Demonstrate that challenges have been undertaken, developing new skills in the process

The committee being first timers was a big challenge for me during this journey, as most of the delegates were new to the concept of MUN’s, so running a smooth committee got a bit difficult. The newbees faced issues in speaking points, because of which the committee went a bit slow, which was a challenge for me as running a newcomer’s committee was a challenging task. To overcome the same, as I sensed the lack of experience and knowledge in the committee in the first committee session, I paused the committee proceeding and I again took a briefing session where I explained a guided the delegates about the proceeding, and conducted a demo-MUN, where I along with my co-chaired displayed how the delegates are expected to speak and how are they supposed to represent their country on the decided agenda.

LOA 4- Show commitment to and perseverance in CAS experiences

I demonstrated by the commitment given by me to the organizers, by conducting the 2 days training sessions, and being on time on all the three days of the conference and also giving the delegates all the necessary knowledge about MUN’s, which I had gained through my experiences. My passion and interest in MUN’s helped me in fulfilling my commitments and giving my 100 percent in delivering my knowledge to the delegates and moderating the committee.

LOA 5- Demonstrate the skills and recognize the benefits of working collaboratively

The collaborative work with my assigned co-chair was extremely important, as  the collaborative work helped us in guiding the delegates well, and in moderating the committee efficiently. We divided the tasks amongst ourselves, wherein I interacted with the delegates and my co-chair recorded the discussion and proceedings. This collaborative work eased our work to a greater extent and also helped us deliver the maximum knowledge to the delegates.

LOA 6- Demonstrate engagement with issues of global significance

The global issue discussed in the UNSC committee, where I was chairing was, “questions of nuclear weapons in North korea”, which has a great global significance. During the discussions, in the committee we discussed and came up with global solutions and created a resolution as a committee to encounter this global issue.

To conclude, this CAS experience enabled me to sharpen my social as well as intrapersonal skills, such as being balanced,open-minded, communicator and knowledgeable. This experience helped me in putting a step further in my area of interest, MUNs and helped me in extending my knowledge and boundaries for the same.
