A Trek to Igatpuri: A Journey of Self-Discovery and Community Engagement

Igatpuri, Maharashtra, was the destination of my recent two-day trek, which was an incredible experience that taught me a lot about myself, my strengths, and the joys of community involvement. This trip was an opportunity for me to push myself physically, connect with nature, and have a positive impact on the local community as part of my CAS (Creativity, Activity, Service) experience.

Learning Outcome 1: Identify own strengths and develop areas for growth

On the day 1, we had a trek in the morning and as soon as I started, I knew that this is going to be tough for me because this was the first time I was doing a trek this steep. But as I kept moving forward, I was getting better at trekking and knew that this is not that hard. Moreover, I felt that I am not being tired so quickly which helped me to complete the trek because it was a 4 hour trek.

Learning Outcome 2: Demonstrate that challenges have been undertaken, developing new skills

The hike itself was an endurance test, with steep inclines and rough terrain to navigate. Although I had trouble at first with the physical demands of the hike, I soon found a hidden strength inside of me. Along the trek, my fellow participants and I fostered a sense of camaraderie and shared determination by encouraging and supporting one another.

Learning Outcome 7: Recognise and consider the ethics of choices and actions

We were divided in groups and we were given a task which was to interact and teach the under privileged something new related to academics or a new skill. In this task, we had assigned roles to each of the volunteer ethically. For example, if someone was good with communicating, we assigned them to communicate with the children and more.

The learner profile attribute caring was developed in me. This is because we had to take care of ourselves as well as other due to the slippery path of the trek. We had to make sure that those who are not able to do the trek, we help them to take them through an easier path.

The journey to Igatpuri was a voyage of self-discovery and community involvement, not just a physical challenge. I discovered where I could improve in terms of my physical fitness, discovered my strengths in teamwork and communication, and felt the tremendous satisfaction that comes from giving back to the community. Without a doubt, this experience has enhanced my CAS journey and had a profound impact on my personal development.
