Spanning six days, our community service boot camp was an enriching experience where we engaged with government-school going children, teaching them various skills and activities. As the volunteer in charge of dance, I had the opportunity to blend my passion for dance with the joy of service, creating memorable moments for the children there and myself. Each day of the boot camp was a whirlwind of activity, laughter, and learning. My role was to teach dance to children who hadn’t ever received any formal dance training. From teaching them basic steps to choreographing a group performance, the experience was both challenging and incredibly rewarding.

LO1 – Identify own strengths and develop areas for growth
Through this experience, I discovered my strengths in teaching and motivating others. My passion for dance helped me connect with the children, and I found joy in seeing them embrace the art form with enthusiasm. However, I also realized the need to improve my patience and adaptability. Working with children required me to adjust my teaching methods and find creative ways to keep them engaged while also ensuring they made the most of the time there.
LO3 – Initiate and plan a CAS experience
Planning the dance sessions required careful preparation. I selected music, designed choreography, and planned daily activities to keep the children engaged. This experience taught me the importance of preparation and the ability to think on my feet when plans needed adjustment. Initiating this CAS experience reinforced my organizational and leadership skills.
LO4 – Show perseverance and commitment in CAS experience
The service demanded perseverance and commitment. Teaching dance for six consecutive days required sustained energy and enthusiasm. There were moments of exhaustion, but the children’s excitement and progress kept me motivated. Staying committed to their growth and enjoyment was a rewarding challenge that tested and strengthened my dedication.
LO6 – Engagement with issues of global significance
This service addressed the issue of educational and recreational opportunities for underprivileged children. Providing these children with access to activities like dance not only offered them joy and creativity but also highlighted the broader issue of inequality in education and extracurricular opportunities. This engagement underscored the importance of creating inclusive opportunities for all children, regardless of their background.
LO7 – Recognize and consider the ethics of choices and actions
Throughout the service, I was mindful of creating an inclusive and supportive environment. Encouraging all children, regardless of their skill level, and providing constructive feedback were essential to maintaining a positive atmosphere. Recognizing the ethical responsibility of my role, I ensured that every child felt valued and inspired to express themselves through dance without fear of judgment.
The community service was a transformative experience, teaching me valuable lessons in leadership, creativity, and empathy. Volunteering for dance allowed me to share my passion while making a positive impact on the lives of underprivileged children.
