Pi Day, celebrated internationally on March 14th, brought together mathematics and physics enthusiasts from different grades. As the media team leader, I volunteered to help organize the event. My goal was to showcase the fun side of math and physics while emphasizing the significance of the celebration. There were certain learning outcomes I developed in the process.
LO 2- Demonstrate that challenges have been undertaken, developing new skills.
As a part of media team, we were supposed to shoot a short video reflecting the activities that might be covered on the day of the event. Brainstorming the ideas was a task that required effort, whileist collaborating with the team members proposed challenges. I also approached a film student for the editing, it was a very time taking task and required efforts. Prior to that, one of my team members had all the videos which had to be all compiled in one video and edited, but due to some personal reasons she could not send them on time because of which our final edited video got delayed. Constantly keeping in touch with the team members and sending constant reminders for the task required communication skills. The new skills developed during this process was communication skills, leadership and collaborative skills along with managing time and task.
LO 3- Initiate and plan a CAS experience
As the media team leader, it was my responsibility to initiate both ideas and execution. We formed a group and created a shared document to roughly outline our plans for the clips that would be used in the final teaser video before the event. Organizing these ideas was essential to ensure a smooth execution. Each team member was assigned specific tasks to ensure everything came together as expected through effective collaboration. Being organized was crucial for the collective execution of our ideas. With everything noted down, we could efficiently put our plans into action. For instance, we arranged for the DP Mathematics and Physics teachers to shoot a video together, inviting everyone to the event. The process of organization and initiation also streamlined the compilation of the final video. Ultimately, initiating and planning were key elements in turning our ideas into reality, resulting in a satisfactory outcome.
LO 5- Demonstrate skills and benefits of working collaboratively.
The level of difficulty in working with others often depends on the individuals involved. For me, collaborating with others is relatively easy when everyone shares the same passion for the project. In such cases, diverse ideas can be embraced, and the process becomes more efficient. However, if a team member lacks respect for others, it becomes challenging to engage them and consider all ideas. During this event, I faced difficulties working with 1-2 people who didn’t submit important clips on time and were hard to contact. This lack of communication created a gap in our workflow and impacted the rest of the team. On the other hand, when I collaborated with a film student, the experience was much smoother. They were open to ideas, and we worked together effectively to produce the expected outcome. Collaborative work undoubtedly requires skill, communication, effort, and dedication, all of which were essential during this process.
LO 6- Engagement with issues of global significance.
although the event did not deal with any global issue directly but it aimed to highlight the importance of mathematics and physics in daily life. The event consisted of several stalls including the ones that had food, highlighting the significance of pi in creations of circular objects, some stalls had quizzes and demonstrations, focusing on the overlooked applications of physics for example- application of something as simple as torque
