Our school organizes community service every year to provide education and fun-filled session with different activities and games to underprivileged students. This year I had the opportunity to be part of this event, this experience was divided into 6 different session throughout 5 August to 20 August 2023.In which I was in the arts and craft workshop where we had to teach students with different activities from rock painting, drawing with leafs to making origami with them which also helped them get creative and showcase their talent. Each weekend was planned with different agendas to engage with students more often.
LO4-Show commitment to and perseverance in CAS experiences
With six sessions spread across multiple weekends, it was essential to stay consistent and engaged throughout all the sessions. There were times when it became difficult to maintain the children’s attention, especially when they didn’t understand the instructions, which required a lot of patience from my side and my team members. Despite these challenges, I stayed committed to helping them complete each activity, ensuring that every child had a positive experience which will be memorable for them in future.Working with the same group over multiple sessions also meant I had to adapt my teaching approach which suits their needs, which strengthened my ability to stay focused and dedicated to each group of students over an extended period and making new experience and learning from our own mistake. This experience taught me the importance of persistence, especially when working toward a meaningful goal that requires continuous effort to engage through the experience.
LO6: Engagement with Issues of Global Significance
This community service program allowed me to engage with issues of global significance, such as inequality in education and gender equality. Many of the children we worked with came from underprivileged backgrounds, highlighting the inconsistent access to quality education and opportunities for creativity. Volunteering in this event helped me gain a deeper understanding of how important it is to span these gaps and provide equal opportunities for all children to explore arts, crafts, and other forms of self-expression such as dance, computer. While our sessions were limited to a 6 weekends, they emphasised the value of creative education in promoting confidence and skills that can help these children in the future to be more expressive.
To conclude volunteering to this event was rewarding experience that allowed me to grow both personally and socially. It taught me the perseverance in the challenges that I face by committing throughout all the sessions to ensure positive outcome for the children.
