Learning outcome 2 – Demonstrate that challenges have been undertaken, developing new skills in the process.
Setting up a stall with macrame products was a challenging yet rewarding experience, as the process of creating each item was intricate and time-consuming. The complexity lay in the fact that macrame involves detailed knotting techniques, with each product requiring a unique approach. Balancing this with my studies made time management particularly difficult. While I had never attempted something of this scale before, I overcame the challenge by setting a strict schedule, breaking tasks into smaller steps, and staying consistent. Though it was exhausting, the satisfaction of completing the products and showcasing them at the stall made it worthwhile. Undertaking new challenges like this is essential for personal growth, as it helps develop resilience, problem-solving skills, and creativity, all of which will be valuable in future endeavors.
Learning outcome 4 – Show commitment to and perseverance in CAS experiences
Creating and selling macrame products required a high level of commitment and perseverance, as the intricate knotting process was both time-consuming and mentally exhausting. Staying dedicated to completing multiple unique pieces while managing academic responsibilities was particularly challenging, often making me feel overwhelmed. To succeed, I had to remain disciplined, follow a structured schedule, and push through moments of frustration. While I generally find it difficult to stay committed to long-term tasks, this experience taught me the importance of persistence in achieving goals. Demonstrating perseverance is crucial, as it builds resilience, strengthens work ethic, and ensures that challenges are met with determination rather than discouragement.
Learning outcome 6 – Demonstrate engagement with issues of global significance
Through this CAS experience, I engaged with the issue of sustainable and ethical consumerism by creating handmade macrame products, promoting the value of artisanal and eco-friendly alternatives to mass-produced goods. This issue is globally significant as fast fashion and industrial production contribute to environmental degradation and exploitative labor practices. I became aware of this through research on sustainability and ethical craftsmanship, which deepened my understanding of how small, mindful choices can contribute to a larger movement. Knowing about global issues like these has made me more conscious of my own consumption habits and the impact of handmade, sustainable products. This experience made me feel empowered, as my work promoted a more responsible way of shopping while also supporting craftsmanship, reinforcing my belief in the importance of ethical and sustainable practices.
Learning outcome 7 – Recognize and consider the ethics of choices and actions
This CAS experience involved ethical considerations related to authenticity, fair pricing, and sustainable craftsmanship. Since I created all the macrame products myself, it was important to ensure that my work was fairly priced and valued for the effort and skill involved. The ethical issue of underpricing handmade products often leads to a lack of appreciation for craftsmanship, which indirectly affects artisans worldwide. Before this experience, I didn’t fully consider the ethical aspect of pricing handmade goods, but after investing so much time and effort, I realized the importance of valuing creative labor. This made me feel more responsible as a creator, reinforcing my belief that handmade work deserves fair recognition and respect.
