Our rural immersion trip took place in the village of Mokhamal in Dang, Gujarat. The primary objective of this journey was to experience rural life and understand the lifestyle of the local tribes. We explored various aspects of village life, including their sources of income, living conditions, agriculture, and more. During our visit, we toured tribal homes, a milking factory, farms, and beautiful waterfalls. We also engaged in cultural activities such as learning Warli painting, basket weaving, and witnessing a traditional Dangi tribal dance. The trip was incredible, and I gained valuable insights into rural life.

LO2: Demonstrate Challenges and Develop New Skills

One significant challenge I encountered was managing a hectic schedule filled with various activities alongside the tribes, including farming, communication, and trekking. For the first time, I participated in farming, which involved cutting dried crops and tying them using the crops themselves. Another obstacle was the language barrier, as the tribes spoke Dangi, which was unfamiliar to me, making communication difficult. However, throughout the trip, I developed my communication skills by attempting to understand the Dangi language and discovered that it shares similarities with Gujarati.

LO5: Recognize the Benefits of Working Collaboratively

Collaboration proved to be extremely beneficial during the trip. One memorable day was spent at a local school, where we cooked and played with the children. We split into two teams: one focused on games and the other on cooking. I volunteered for the cooking team, as there were more participants available. Preparing food in large quantities was a new experience for me, involving chopping vegetables and cooking. Working together made it much easier for us to complete the meal on time.

LO6: Engagement with Global Issues

During the trip, I became aware of significant global issues such as inadequate education, poverty, and sanitation. While I had learned about these topics in school, witnessing them firsthand was eye-opening. This experience highlighted the importance of addressing these challenges to ensure that everyone has access to the necessary resources for a clean and healthy life.

LO7: Consider the Ethics of Choices and Actions

A kind gesture we undertook for the children at the school was donating books, clothes, and stationery. During our initial visit, we were struck by the children’s situation; although their basic needs were met, they still faced many challenges. This motivated us to contribute resources to support the school further.

Conclusion

Overall, the trip was an incredible experience where I learned a great deal about tribal life. I developed my communication skills through interactions with tribal members, gaining insights into their daily lives. One of my favorite parts of the trip was night trekking, which added to the richness of the experience.
