This term, our grade took the opportunity to welcome the incoming class of juniors through hosting a fun party for them. As one of my CAS experiences, I volunteered to be a part of the dance team organizing entertainment for the event. In doing so, I aimed to meet several learning outcomes.

By joining the dance crew, I specifically challenged myself against LO2 by stepping outside my comfort zone to learn a new skill. As someone who doesn’t consider herself a strong dancer, taking the lead to choreograph and perform routines pushed my limits. Through dedicated practice with my team, I gained confidence in my growing abilities and talent for movement.

My commitment to overcoming this fear and representing our grade at the party demonstrates LO4. On the day, presenting newly learned dances in front of others required perseverance. While nerves struck me at first, channeling focus into each performance and enjoying the positive energy from the audience boosted my stage presence. The thrill of completing each song with my teammates was extremely rewarding.

This experience has also allowed me to better understand my strengths and areas for growth relating to LO1. Trying something entirely new highlighted my dedication but also preference for rehearsal over freestyling. Accepting feedback to improve further showed room for expanding my comfort zone. Overall, challenging myself creatively in this way expanded my self-awareness.

Taking on dancing has left me feeling empowered to step outside expected roles and try activities I previously doubted myself in. The lessons of perseverance, teamwork and self-reflection I have gained will no doubt aid me in reaching my goals both in and beyond school. I am thankful for the opportunity to grow through this CAS experience.

LO1: Identify own strengths and develop areas for growth

Through organizing and performing with the dance team, I recognized my strength in choreography and my ability to teach dance moves to others. However, I also identified that I needed to improve my communication skills when giving instructions to large groups.

LO2: Demonstrate that challenges have been undertaken, developing new skills in the process

Learning to coordinate a group performance was a significant challenge. I developed new skills in time management, group leadership, and performance planning. Teaching dance moves to peers with varying skill levels pushed me to develop more effective teaching methods.

LO3: Demonstrate how to initiate and plan a CAS experience

I took initiative in planning rehearsal schedules, selecting music, and coordinating with other team members. This required creating timelines, organizing practice spaces, and ensuring everyone had the resources they needed to participate effectively.

LO4: Show commitment to and perseverance in CAS experiences

Despite busy academic schedules, I maintained regular attendance at practice sessions and encouraged others to do the same. We persevered through initial difficulties in synchronizing our movements and perfecting the routine.

LO5: Demonstrate the skills and recognize the benefits of working collaboratively

Working within a dance team required constant collaboration. We made collective decisions about choreography, divided responsibilities, and supported each other during practices. This experience highlighted how different strengths within a team can create a more impressive final performance.

LO6: Demonstrate engagement with issues of global significance

Through dance, we celebrated cultural diversity by incorporating different dance styles and music from various cultures, promoting inclusivity and cross-cultural understanding within our school community.

LO7: Recognize and consider the ethics of choices and actions

We made conscious decisions about appropriate music choices, dance moves, and costumes that would be inclusive and respectful of our school’s diverse community. We also ensured that practice schedules respected everyone’s time commitments and academic responsibilities.
