Introduction
In 11th grade, I chose the HDP program as a part of my CAS journey, with the goal of improving my table tennis skills. Though I was already familiar with the sport, I saw this as an opportunity to refine my technique and develop new skills. This experience not only strengthened my physical abilities but also taught me valuable lessons in perseverance, self-awareness, and maintaining a balanced lifestyle.
LO1: Identifying Strengths and Areas for Growth
Table tennis had always been a sport I enjoyed, and I recognized my strengths in hand-eye coordination and reflexes. However, this program revealed areas where I needed improvement, such as mastering spin techniques, footwork, and consistency in my shots. Identifying these gaps was crucial in setting goals for myself, and with the guidance of my coach, I made steady progress.
LO2: Undertaking Challenges and Developing New Skills
The journey wasn’t without its challenges. Competing with more experienced players pushed me to improve rapidly, and learning advanced techniques like topspin and backspin required patience and practice. There were moments of frustration, especially when I couldn’t perfect a particular shot, but these challenges ultimately helped me develop resilience and discipline. Over time, I noticed significant improvements in my gameplay and tactical approach to matches.
LO 3: Demonstrate how to initiate and plan a CAS experience
For my HDP Table Tennis experience, I initiated the activity by choosing it as part of my Holistic Development Program. Recognizing my interest in improving physical fitness and mental agility, I took the responsibility to plan my participation. I set personal goals, such as refining my technique and enhancing my focus during matches. This involved organizing a consistent practice schedule, working on specific skills like footwork and reflexes, and engaging with teammates to foster a collaborative learning environment. By opting for table tennis, I was able to take charge of my development, ensuring I made deliberate efforts to improve both my physical abilities and strategic thinking.
LO4: Perseverance and Commitment
The HDP program required consistent effort and regular practice sessions. Balancing these sessions with my academic workload was a test of my commitment. Despite the busy schedule, I ensured I dedicated time to improving my skills. This perseverance not only enhanced my performance but also instilled a sense of discipline that I carried into other aspects of my life.
Engaging in Physical Activity for Well-being
One of the reasons I chose this activity was to prioritize my physical health and maintain a balanced lifestyle. The high-energy nature of table tennis kept me active and helped reduce stress during my academic year. It reinforced the importance of integrating physical activities into my routine for overall well-being.
IB Learner Profile Attributes
This CAS experience allowed me to embody several IB learner profile attributes:
- Balanced: By engaging in physical activity, I maintained a healthy equilibrium between academics and physical fitness.
- Principled: I remained committed to practicing with integrity, respecting my opponents, and adhering to the rules of the sport.
- Reflective: Through self-assessment and feedback from my coach, I reflected on my progress and worked diligently to improve.
