CAS Blog: Fitness in School – A Journey Toward Strength and Growth

The non-optional Holistic Development Program (HDP) fitness curriculum in school was a valuable opportunity to engage in structured physical activities aimed at promoting overall well-being. The program included floor exercises and frisbee, both of which allowed me to challenge myself, develop new skills, and understand the importance of teamwork and consistency. Through these activities, I gained insights into my strengths, areas for growth, and the significance of staying physically active in addressing broader societal issues.

LO 1: Identify Own Strengths and Develop Areas for Growth

Participating in HDP fitness highlighted both my strengths and areas where I could improve. During floor exercises, I discovered my strong core strength and endurance, which enabled me to perform planks and crunches effectively. However, my flexibility proved to be a challenge, particularly in stretches like forward bends. Recognizing this as an area for growth, I began incorporating daily stretches into my routine, gradually improving my flexibility over time.

In frisbee, I realized my strength in strategic thinking and quick decision-making, which helped my team during gameplay. However, my precision and consistency in throwing the frisbee required improvement. By practicing consistently, I developed better control, contributing more effectively to my team’s performance.

LO 2: Demonstrate That Challenges Have Been Undertaken, Developing New Skills in the Process

Floor exercises posed a significant challenge, particularly the planks, which demanded a high level of upper-body strength and endurance. Initially, I struggled to hold the plank position for long, but through regular practice and perseverance, I was able to increase my duration significantly. This experience taught me the importance of gradual progress and dedication.

Learning to play frisbee was another rewarding challenge. Catching the frisbee on the move and throwing it at precise angles required coordination and focus. At first, it was difficult to manage the trajectory and distance of my throws. However, with guidance from peers and repeated practice, I mastered the skill, which greatly enhanced my confidence and enjoyment of the game.

LO 5: Demonstrate the Skills and Recognize the Benefits of Working Collaboratively

Frisbee provided an excellent platform for teamwork and collaboration. The game demanded clear communication and effective coordination with teammates to strategize and execute moves. I learned how to communicate quickly and effectively on the field, which significantly improved our gameplay and team spirit.

Even during individual activities like floor exercises, the group setting created an encouraging environment. Watching my peers push their limits inspired me to do the same, while their encouragement helped me overcome challenges. This mutual support fostered a sense of camaraderie and reinforced the value of collective effort in achieving personal and shared goals.

LO 4: Show Commitment to and Perseverance in CAS Experiences

Engaging in the HDP fitness program required consistent commitment and dedication. Despite the physical challenges posed by floor exercises, I stayed motivated and regularly practiced outside the scheduled sessions to build my strength and endurance.

Frisbee also demanded perseverance, as I initially found it difficult to throw accurately and catch the frisbee while in motion. Over time, through consistent effort and a willingness to learn from my mistakes, I improved significantly. Balancing these fitness activities with my academic responsibilities was not easy, but staying committed to my goals helped me maintain focus and discipline.

LO 6: Demonstrate Engagement With Issues of Global Significance

The fitness program emphasized the importance of regular physical activity in addressing global health concerns such as rising obesity rates and mental health challenges. Engaging in floor exercises reinforced the significance of maintaining physical fitness to prevent lifestyle-related health issues.

Frisbee, being an inclusive and accessible sport, underscored how physical activities can bridge social divides. Its simplicity highlighted the potential of sports in fostering community engagement and promoting well-being, especially in underserved areas. Additionally, the mental health benefits of physical activity became evident as the routine enhanced my mood, reduced stress, and boosted my focus, illustrating how fitness can contribute to addressing global mental health concerns.

Reflection

The HDP fitness program was a transformative experience that taught me to recognize my strengths, address areas for improvement, and value the importance of teamwork and consistency. It instilled in me a deeper appreciation for the role of fitness in personal well-being and its potential to address broader global health issues. The lessons learned during this program will continue to guide me in prioritizing an active and healthy lifestyle.
