Community Service
A key component of societal progress, individual empowerment, and human development is education. While some parts of the world consider a good education to be a given, there is a sizable disparity that denies underprivileged children’s access to this fundamental right. To provide an opportunity to the underprivileged students Fountainhead School organized community service where in SMC students come and participate in their personal favorite activity. There were several different activity organized such as dance, arts and crafts, science projects, ICT, Football etc. From August 5 to August 20, FS held six sessions over the weekends students from the government school visited FS and were engaged in their particular favorite activity this also helps them to broaden their knowledge and hone their talents. As art and craft volunteers, we were divided into various groups and assigned a small number of students to teach various crafts over the span of the weekends, such as making a marble bookmark, stone paintings, paper snakes, etc. We had to bear in mind that before we could begin teaching them something new, we needed to be friendly with those kids in order to make them feel comfortable. In order to make them feel comfortable during the session we started the sessions with an ice breaking activity where each one of us shared our names and what we like to do this particular activity before teaching them something helped a lot because it makes them feel comfortable and friendly with us.Teaching those kids made me feel incredibly joyful, and seeing their smiles after they finished their crafts motivated me to continue teaching them new things during the duration of the session.
L5. Demonstrate skills and benefits of working collaboratively
Teamwork was a crucial factor that we had to keep in mind to ensure that the session was fruitful. In order to make learning enjoyable for the students as well as to help us manage the children and work cooperatively with one another, my group and I decided to split up into smaller groups of 2-3 students per volunteer. This idea was very well executed which gave each and every one of us an opportunity to interact with those children and help them learn different crafts. When discussing crafts that required more than one person, like marble bookmarks or origami, our group came together and assisted the kids in making their creations.
L4. Show perseverance and commitment in CAS experience
To complete with this service needed for commitment which came in every weekend because of the energy the students came with and how much they enjoyed the sessions.Although it may have sounded straightforward, it wasn’t always easy to be resilient throughout the entire span of the service since DP brings in with several deadline in hand and also coming to school on Sunday makes me feel very lazy. However, what inspired me to come was seeing the children’s happy faces while they were engaged in the activity.
L7. Recognize and consider the ethics of choices and actions
I’ve learned over the time that coming from a wealthy background gives me access to most things such as the best education, a secure environment that fosters my personal development as well. The community service program at FS gave me an ideal chance to interact with the underprivileged childrens and teach them different skills. It was also a wonderful chance to spread joy among those children and put a smile to their faces.
