LO6 (DEMONSTRATE ENGAGEMENT WITH ISSUES OF GLOBAL SIGNIFICANCE)
By going to Kosmal so that I can address the most impactful issues around farmers, including sustainable agriculture, rural poverty, climate change and also safeguarding local culture. Those challenges are far from unique to Kosmal; they are reflections of larger conversations playing out around the globe, creating a tangible opportunity for students to engage with how global problems unfold in their own backyard.
In Kosmal, we taught the students math and it was quite fun to engage with them and speak to them about them. To have a conversation with any student there was so fruitful as they were shy to get comfortable but as soon as they did, it was so fun to engage with them, playing games and teaching them. I taught the 4th standard and it was so interesting to learn how smartly they were able to solve each sum and how fast and also how invested they were.
Similarly, exercised in teaching within the context of a rural community are ethics (LO7) of choices made and actions taken. Students need to be mindful of the systemic and cultural dimensions of their interventions in the schools they are working with. As they seek to contribute in ways that are empowering rather than disruptive to the community, students will ask these questions. Specifically, by engaging in conversation with local teachers and students directly, they can learn more about teaching ethically that illustrates mutual respect and support.
The exploration of the countryside near Kosmal, allowing for time in nature and showing me some local practices as well as global challenges (LO6). As is the case with Kosmal, rural areas have often been at the leading edge of environmental changes, be it via climate change (Chaudhuri et al. Walking through forests gave me hands-on experience on how all of these changes affected nature and also the people living there.
