Rock Climbing

Duration : 28th Dec to 31st Jan (early in, once a cycle)

Rock climbing was a sport I had never really learnt or participated in, this was the first time that I was actively involved in learning this sport. Through this activity I challenged my physical capabilities as I stepped out of my comfort zone to set a goal for myself to touch the top of the wall. Our sessions started with warm up activities such as jogging and stretching post which the climbing started, during our first session I was barely able to reach the top of the wall. Post the first session I found myself contemplating if I had set a really hard goal for myself and if I would even be able to achieve it or not. However, during the second session I was able to reach the top of the wall, having achieved my target gave me a feeling of accomplishment.

We were taught many things about this sport from how to wear and lock the harness to how to grip and move on the wall. For the first two sessions we practiced on a normal wall however for the remaining two sessions we climbed an slightly inclined wall, I was not able to reach the top of the inclined wall however it was still a great learning experience. Alongside physical strength this sport also requires a great deal of mental resilience, there were times when I felt like giving up and to get down the harness due to body pain however I tried my level best to remain composed and motivate myself to keep trying harder. I ensured to listen carefully to the instructions given by sir and act accordingly in order to ensure I can achieve my target.

LO1 – Identify own strengths and areas of growth
Rock climbing requires great hand strength, after participating in this activity I have come to realize that it is a great scope for me to work on my body strength. This self evaluation has made me realize the importance of participating in activities that are physically demanding. The feedback I received from the coaches helped me improve my performance and participate better.

LO2 – Demonstrate that challenges have been undertaken, developing new skills
Since the sessions were scheduled during early inn timings, on certain days I had to push myself to wake up earlier than my usual time and not skip the sessions. This sport being relatively new to me, it took some motivation to ensure that I complete the entire course and at the same time learn new skills.

LO4 – Show perseverance and commitment in CAS experience
I feared judgment from others as some of them were well versed with this sport, because I really struggled in the first few sessions. It made me feel quite demotivated, however I was determined to achieve my goal. By showing perseverance I managed to reach the top of the wall and at the same time learnt a completely new sport.
