Rural Immersions:-


In this trip we went to mokamal to experience and immerse ourselves in the rural areas of India for one week of december. The main purpose of this trip was to have a full immersive experience of the rural society and understand the life of the tribes who lived there.In this trip we did several things including visiting local factories,schools and wilderness. We learned the main sources of income in the rural areas were milking cows and farming crops. We also learnt about how the farmers there migrate a lot for half a year in order to harvest sugarcane to earn money ranging from 30-40k.I learned a lot of valuable information like how minimalistic the villagers were as they were able to use the minimum resources they had to achieve wonderful results. I learned a lot of things which include but is not limited to how to harvest weed, get rice out of the crops and also grind flour using their vessels/machines.

LO1:Identify your own strengths and develop areas for Growth.

I find communicating with people easier relative to others and hence was able to easily have fun with the children when we visited one of the local schools there, and because of that I was able to easily have fun with the children and teach them how to play frisbee and was able to make them comfortable around us. One of the things I had to work on was my skills of comprehending and speaking Gujarati as it was occasionally hard for me to understand and communicate with the children of the school as most of them were unable to understand Hindi and I was not very fluent in speaking Gujarati.

LO2:Demonstrate that challenges have been taken to develop new skills.


One of the most challenging thing in this trip was communicating with people in Gujrati as I only knew some basic words in Gujarati to understand what the people were talking to me but because most of them only understand Gujrati it was a little hard to communicate with them directly.Another thing which I found challenging was the trek. The Trek was a little long for me and it was hard to keep up with other students.

LO5:Demonstrate Skills and Benefits of Working collaboratively.

One of the things we did on the trip was weaving a basket using bamboo.That was a very long process to be done and a repetitive process but with the help of teamwork we were able to complete a well made basket in just 1 hour which really demonstrated the advantages of teamwork.This was also evident when making food for the children of the school as a huge amount of food was being prepared and hence needed a lot of resources to be prepped like vegetables to cut. It was a lengthy and time consuming process for a single person to cook all the food and working together played an important role in cooking the food right in time.

LO6:Engagement with issues of Global significance.

One of the global issues which was prominent over there was poverty because of the frequent migration happening for jobs the villagers had to do. One of the actions we all took was that we raised approximately 11000 rs for donating clothes and stationary in one of the government schools over there and then distributed the clothes and stationary to everyone. The leftover funds were used in donating food to the children of the school as one of their major meals was the mid day meal they get in the school for their nutrition.

LO7:Recognise and consider the ethics of choices and actions.

One of the things I found was how the farmers would find innovative ways to steal basic things like electricity as it was very important to them and was very expensive for them to afford electricity for their homes.I also learned that all the farmers used to not marry their partners for a long time but still be in a living relationship with each other because of the financial issues and I found it interesting how they used to handle divorces acting.What they used to do was that they used to ask the couple who want to go in a living relationship that if they ever want a divorce they will try their best to work out anything to save the relationship but if no solution were found than the person in guilt used to pay the other 5k for each child they had to take care of and their family connection with the other families would stay the same after the divorce as well and live together even though the couple does not live together anymore.

Overall the trip was interesting and eye opening as to how I am so privileged and what problems the farmers face in the rural society.
