I signed up for cross country running with the goal of getting in better shape. What I discovered, however, was a journey that stretched far beyond the physical. They say the greatest battles are fought within, and for me, the cross country running track became the battleground. The experience not only improved my fitness but also unexpectedly ticked off several key IB CAS learning outcomes.
LO 2. Demonstrate that challenges have been undertaken, developing new skills in the process:
My initial struggle to jog a single kilometer transformed into the ability to pace myself, run more miles, and even find a rhythm in the repetitive motion. Every completed run , chipped away at self-doubt, replacing it with a quiet sense of accomplishment.
LO 4. Show commitment to and perseverance in CAS experiences.
There were 5 races in all. Initially the idea of completing 5 races of 5 kms seemed way out of my comfort zone. This made me quite hesitant to even sign up for this run. However, I knew if I stayed consistent with the my diet and health regime in between races as well, the races would become easier with every race.
The culminating race was a culmination of personal growth. Crossing the finish line, exhausted yet exhilarated, was a victory not just over the course, but over my own mental barriers. This experience served as a powerful testament to the benefits of pushing yourself physically, the value of finding a supportive community, and the profound impact of physical activity on mental well-being.
Hence, I showed commitment and perseverance to show up for every race, even while the though of it seemed taxing or out of my comfort zone.
LO 5 Demonstrates the skills and recognize the benefits of working collaboratively:
The journey wasn’t a solitary one. Running alongside others fostered a sense of camaraderie. We shared encouraging words, swapped strategies, and celebrated each other’s victories. It was a network of support that extended beyond the finish line.
To conclude, this activity illustrates the learner profile “Principled” in me . To be consistent, show perseverance not only in the races but also in between races. I learnt how being principled with your mindset of pushing yourself to extremes could help you to achieve heights that you might not have thought of accomplishing.
