Sports Tournament

As an avid table tennis player, I leaped at the opportunity to represent my school in the annual inter school competition. Little did I know that this event would lead to a path of self-discovery, perseverance, and the development of new skills beyond my gaming ability. Here’s how this CAS experience helped me improve in various dimensions:

L1.Identify own strengths and develop areas for growth
Going into the event, I thought my best table tennis skills were my great footwork and quickness. However, I quickly realised that my mental game needed to improve. In the early rounds, I let easy mistakes and close losses disturb me, which hampered my subsequent performance. Knowing my weakness allowed me to concentrate on strategies like positive self-talk and emotional regulation mid-game as the competition continued.

On the other side, I was amazed at how my often overlooked diligence and coachability turned out to be valuable strengths. My commitment to intense training and continually absorbing my coach’s input enabled me to achieve tangible progress in each round. Recognising these strengths gave me more confidence and determination to keep improving my game.

L2. Demonstrate that challenges have been undertaken, developing new skills
While table tennis was the main event, this competition presented me with challenges that went beyond simply playing the sport. With a mixed team event on the horizon, I had to master coordination strategies and devise on-the-fly tactics with players I had never played with before. This put my communication, leadership, and psychological skills to the test, particularly trust and cognitive synchronisation.

Furthermore, because I was representing my school, I had to present myself professionally both on and off the court as an ambassador for our institution. This entailed honing my manners, sportsmanship, and public speaking skills whether dealing with opponents, referees, or other spectators. It was an important lesson in professionalism that will surely help me in the future.

L4. Show perseverance and commitment in CAS experience
The route to ultimate tournament success was fraught with disappointments and hard fights that tested my tenacity. I had a bizarre ankle injury in the quarterfinals, forcing me to sit out for hours while undergoing medical attention. However, I persevered through the discomfort and returned to the court, delivering a remarkable comeback performance.

There were also other instances where controversial line calls or questionable referee judgements harmed me and my teammates. Instead of being discouraged, we demonstrated resilience by maintaining our focus and applying great pressure on our opponents. Our perseverance paid off with a hard-fought tournament championship for our school.

L7. Recognize and consider the ethics of choices and actions
Throughout the tournament, I faced several moments that demanded ethical decision-making, both on and off the court. One instance involved a controversial point where my opponent’s serve was clearly out, but the referee did not catch it. I was conflicted about whether to let it slide or point it out, knowing it could impact the game’s outcome. However, I chose to adhere to the principles of fairness and sportsmanship, refraining from contesting the call to maintain the spirit of the game.

Additionally, as a representative of my school, I understood that my actions reflected not only on me but also on my institution. I was mindful of maintaining respectful interactions with opponents, referees, and other participants, even when things didn’t go my way. By consciously choosing to behave ethically, I aimed to demonstrate integrity and uphold the values of the sport, reinforcing the importance of honesty and respect in competitive environments.

This experience highlighted the significance of making ethical choices, showing me that how we compete is just as important as the results we achieve. The lessons I’ve learned in fairness and respect are ones I will carry forward, both in sports and in life.

Looking back, the CAS experience was about more than simply the numbers on the scoreboard. It helped me recognise areas where I need to improve, such as my mental toughness and poise under pressure. It challenged me to step outside of my comfort zone and learn new talents, which improved my overall performance as an athlete and teammate. Above all, it was a monument to the force of dedication, which I had to exhibit time and again when confronted with obstacles. I can’t wait to apply everything I’ve learned as I work towards my next CAS challenge!
