For my CAS experience, I participated in a two-day trekking trip to Igatpuri, Maharashtra. The goals I set for this experience were to challenge myself physically and mentally, develop teamwork and leadership skills, engage with local communities, and gain a deeper understanding of global issues related to sustainable development.
During the trekking trip, I had the opportunity to identify both my strengths and weaknesses. I realised that I had good physical stamina, which helped during the treks, but I struggled with effective time management and planning. Knowing my strengths and weaknesses is crucial because it allows me to make informed decisions about where to focus my efforts. One area I need to work on is time management, as it affects my ability to complete certain tasks efficiently during the trip. Overcoming this weakness would have benefited me by reducing stress and increasing my productivity.
The challenges I faced during the trekking trip were both physical and mental. The treks were physically demanding, especially since I had experienced a loss of fitness due to COVID restrictions. Additionally, engaging in activities with the students at the underprivileged school required adaptability and effective communication. Overcoming these challenges taught me the importance of resilience and adaptability. I also discovered that I had a knack for leadership when coordinating group activities. This skill could be useful in the future when working on team-based projects. Having acquired these new skills, I feel more confident in my ability to face and overcome challenges, which is essential for personal growth.
The activity that demanded commitment and perseverance was the trash pickup and cleaning of the surrounding area near the dam. It was physically demanding, and at times, the work seemed endless. This experience made me realize the importance of commitment and dedication when working towards a common goal. Although it was challenging, the sense of accomplishment afterwards was rewarding. Commitment and perseverance are important as they enable us to see tasks through to completion, even when they are difficult or time-consuming.
Working collaboratively has always been relatively easy for me, but it’s not without its challenges. During the activities at the school, I had to work closely with my peers to ensure the students had a great time. While most teamwork was smooth, there were moments of disagreement and differing opinions. However, these experiences taught me the importance of effective communication and compromise when working with others. Teamwork and leadership were crucial in ensuring the success of the activities at the school, highlighting the significance of collaborative skills in achieving common goals.
Engaging with local communities during the trip allowed me to recognize issues of global significance. At the underprivileged school, we saw firsthand the importance of quality education and reducing inequality. The school lacked resources, and the students faced challenges that many others did not. Understanding these issues on a local level made me more aware of their global implications. It also made me realise that education and reducing inequality are critical components of achieving the Sustainable Development Goals. This experience has motivated me to further engage with these global issues and seek ways to contribute positively.
During the trip, ethical considerations were evident, especially when working with the underprivileged school. It was crucial to ensure that our activities were respectful, culturally sensitive, and aligned with the best interests of the students. Ethical issues indirectly affected us as we aimed to create a positive impact while being mindful of local customs and values. This experience reinforced the importance of ethical decision-making in all actions, particularly when engaging with communities and individuals from diverse backgrounds.
During this CAS experience, our choices and actions were guided by empathy and respect for the students and the local community. We aimed to create a positive and inclusive environment during the school activities, demonstrating compassion for the underprivileged students and their challenges. This experience encouraged me to inquire about the local issues faced by underprivileged school and the broader global issues related to education and inequality. It sparked a genuine curiosity about how these issues can be addressed effectively. CAS experiences often require creative problem-solving and critical thinking, especially when faced with challenges or unexpected situations. In this trekking trip, we had to think creatively to design engaging activities for the students and critically assess their impact. Ethical issues in CAS experiences challenge students to make principled decisions. By considering the ethical implications of our actions, we learn to uphold principles of fairness, respect, and responsibility in our interactions with others. CAS experiences provide a supportive environment for both intellectual and physical risk-taking. In this trekking trip, I took physical risks by challenging my fitness levels and mental risks by coordinating activities at the school. The support of peers and mentors allowed me to take these risks with confidence.
In this CAS experience, I developed the learner profile attributes of being open-minded and a risk-taker. Being open-minded allowed me to embrace new experiences and cultures during the trip, and being a risk-taker pushed me to step out of my comfort zone, especially during physically demanding activities. This experience also connected to my academic interests, as it highlighted the importance of education and global issues, which align with my goal of becoming an Aerospace Engineer. By understanding the broader impact of these issues, I can approach my future career with a greater sense of responsibility and purpose. The highlight of this experience for me was witnessing the smiles on the faces of the students at the underprivileged school and knowing that our efforts had made a positive impact on their day. This experience challenged my perspectives on education and inequality and reinforced my commitment to contributing to society. In terms of learning, I discovered the value of perseverance, effective communication, and adaptability. These skills are not only relevant to my CAS experience but also to various aspects of life, including future academic and professional endeavours. I would change my time management approach if I were to do this activity again, as it would help me be more efficient in organising tasks and activities. I intend to apply the learning from this experience by continuing to engage in activities that promote education and reduce inequality. Whether through volunteering, mentorship, or advocacy, I want to contribute to my community positively. This CAS experience has motivated me to be an active participant in addressing global issues.
