NIMUN XIII was a Model United Nations event held in Vadodara, where I participated in the Disarmament and International Security Committee as the delegate for the Republic of Türkiye. Additionally, I was part of a Group Delegation representing the United States of America in the General Assembly, discussing the illicit trade of drugs. My goals for this CAS experience were to enhance my skills in research, communication, critical thinking, and collaboration, while also gaining a deeper understanding of global issues.
Participating in NIMUN XIII allowed me to identify both my strengths and weaknesses. I realised that I have strong research and communication skills, which were valuable in formulating arguments and presenting my delegation’s stance. However, I also recognized that I need to work on my time management skills to handle impromptu speeches more effectively. Knowing my strengths and weaknesses is crucial for personal growth as it enables me to focus on areas that need improvement. For instance, improving time management would have been beneficial during committee sessions when I needed to respond quickly to motions and debates.
The most challenging aspect of NIMUN XIII was the impromptu speeches and debates. I had not encountered a similar challenge before, and it was particularly daunting because it required quick thinking and effective articulation. Overcoming this challenge involved practising on-the-spot speech drafting and improving my ability to think critically under pressure. Undertaking this challenge was significant, as it pushed me out of my comfort zone and allowed me to develop the valuable skill of thinking on my feet. This newfound skill is essential not only for Model UN but also for my future career goals in Aerospace Engineering, where quick decision-making is vital.
Planning and initiating my participation in NIMUN XIII involved researching the topics, preparing position papers, and collaborating with fellow delegates to form blocs and resolutions. I found the planning stage more challenging than initiation because organising the information and coordinating with teammates required careful thought and organisation. This experience helped me discover my capability to plan and initiate complex activities effectively. Knowing how to plan and initiate activities is essential for any endeavour, including my academic pursuits and future career, where preparation and organisation play a significant role.
Commitment and perseverance were necessary during NIMUN XIII, especially when faced with long committee sessions and intense debates. There were moments when the discussions became challenging and required persistence to stay engaged and contribute meaningfully. Personally, I find it relatively easy to commit to tasks and be persistent, but this experience reinforced the importance of these qualities in achieving success. Showing commitment and perseverance is crucial not only in CAS experiences but also in achieving long-term goals.
Working collaboratively with others has its challenges, but I generally find it relatively easy to cooperate with teammates. During NIMUN XIII, collaborating with delegates from different backgrounds and viewpoints was essential to formulating effective resolutions and making progress in committee sessions. It’s important to be able to work collaboratively because it enhances the quality of solutions and promotes diverse perspectives. Teamwork and leadership were crucial in our activity, as they allowed us to navigate complex global issues collectively.
The issues discussed at NIMUN XIII, such as territorial disputes, maritime piracy, and illicit drug trade, are of global significance. These discussions provided insight into the complexities of these problems and their impact on the world. Being aware of global issues contributes to personal growth by fostering a sense of responsibility and a broader perspective. Knowing about these issues has made me more aware of the challenges our world faces and motivated me to contribute positively to addressing them.
This CAS experience allowed me to model empathy, compassion, and respect for others by considering different viewpoints and working collaboratively. It encouraged me to become a genuine inquirer by delving deep into complex global issues. It promoted creative and critical thinking by requiring me to formulate innovative solutions to diplomatic challenges. Ethical issues related to diplomacy and global politics allowed me to become principled by considering the ethical implications of decisions. The experience enabled intellectual and physical risk-taking in a supportive environment, which is essential for personal growth and development.
