For Pi-day, I decided to be a part of the organizing committee. I was a part of the Decor team and math team. As a member of both teams, I was responsible for contributing to ideas in decor, setting up the venue while also having my own interactive math stall. I participated in this event to show my love for math, while also helping other realize the beauty and importance of this irrational number and the discoveries it helped scaffold.

LO1 – Identify own strengths and develop areas for growth

As the part of the decor team, most of the ideas came from the head, but some of the ideas included my creativity, although there were room for improvement. However preparing the decorations which worked out for me. As for the math team, I was always fascinated how math worked. I made people learn the decimals of the pie, even I did not know more than (.14), but I learned and demonstrated to people visiting my stalls.

LO2 – Demonstrate that challenges have been undertaken, developing new skills

One of the biggest challenges I faced was deciding an activity or a game for our stall. Me and my friend brainstormed number of activities that included different Math concepts and some concept demonstrations in real life. Finally, we decided to go with a game as we saw many of the other stalls having the same idea. We chose to go for the game which is literally the most related to the event celebrations which was the value of “Pi”. The game was about making the participants memorize the digits in the value of Pi for 30 seconds and then making them remember as much as they were able to.

LO3 – Initiate and plan a CAS experience

As part of the decor team, I did initiate a lot of brainstorming taken place as a team, with help of by supervisors and my team, we came up with many ideas for decoration. Prior to the event, I also attended frequent early ins. For gathering material for the decor, The team and I had to plan, organize and collect all the resources for the event day, put everything at the right place, so that the event goes hit.

LO4 – Show perseverance and commitment in CAS experience.

By going early-ins and completing all the work on time, showing presence on the day of the event, working for straight 3 weeks at least 1 hour every day, for making the event successful, I showed perseverance and commitment in CAS experience.

LO5 – Demonstrate skills and benefits of working collaboratively.

The day of event was a big day as planning, organizing and executing was a challenge. But we were 25-30 people working on it. With effective allocation of roles, we were able to prepare decor material as well as stall on time. Working in a team reduced the number of hours we had to spend on one thing, dividing and assigning roles was also something that proved to be beneficial as it led to more work done. One challenge with working in a team was to take regular follow-ups on what is done and what is left, at time when work was not done, the plan had to change. Apart from this, working in a team in unison helped make the event a success.

In conclusion, hinging in organizing the Pi-day helped me express my love for physics and math, while also helped me develop certain set of skills which will be useful to me in the future.
