Wall painting (Creativity)

Wall painting was a project that I took with a few of my friends where we were given a wall of a dining area that we had to paint. Given that it was our project, we as a team had to decide on what to do and how to, and what roles to give to everyone.

Goals:

Creativity – Painting the wall was itself a creativity process but it also included what we would draw and paint that connected well with the place we were given. Making the wall look attractive and interesting so that people would not get bored of it.

LO1: Identify own strengths and develop areas for growth

Did you identify your strengths and weaknesses?

  • Strengths: Creating composition from reference, Painting thin lines, Use of space
  • Weaknesses: Making colours. My speed was slow so took more time

How do you feel now that you’re aware of it?

I feel I should work on my weaknesses so that it helps me to make my work better and also after knowing my strengths, I realized my forte and how I could use this skill further in making artwork.

Did you work/ or would like to on your weakness?

Realizing my weaknesses, I thought about how important it is to work on them and so I started to do sketches by giving myself a time limit. I saw videos on colour mixing which helped me to understand colour theory.

Doing this benefits me to make my artworks better. As an art student who wants to pursue an arts career, making my artwork in a time limit helps me to make more artworks and also learning about colour theory helps in identifying what kind of colours I want.

LO2: Demonstrate that challenges have been undertaken, developing new skills in the process

What was so challenging and why?

The most challenging part was thinking about what to do on the wall. Considering that the artwork will stay on the wall for a very long time, it was a challenge to make something that people would always enjoy watching and won’t get bored of seeing it everyday. There were many ideas that we came up with as a team but deciding on one and getting that approved from our supervisor was a challenge.

How did you overcome this challenge?

After discussing what everyone wanted to do we came up with references and shared it with our supervisor, he told us what we can improve on. Once everyone was on the same page and the same theme, we divided parts of the wall to everyone so everyone could do what they wanted to but also have some sense of connection between all the works.

How do you feel about having undertaken this challenge? Why is it important for you to undertake new challenges?

Undertaking this challenge was very interesting and made me happy to think how having so many different perspectives, we could still come to the same page and achieve the goal that we had set for ourselves.

It was important to take challenges as it gives me an experience of working in the real world where you have a lot of people to work with where your ideologies don’t align but still we have to get the work done together. Having challenges makes you think about how to solve them, which helps in improving my critical thinking skills and helps me grow as a person.

LO4: Show commitment to and perseverance in CAS experiences

What made this activity difficult where perseverance or commitment was necessary?

As we had to paint in our school’s dining area, we had to do it in school hours but because we couldn’t miss classes we had to come in early to do this where we would work in the morning for one hour before our other classmates came. Waking up early everyday and working and then doing school work and then doing other extracurricular activities made it tiring. Because we had willingly taken this project we were committed to do this project so showing commitment was very necessary and important.

Is it easy for you to commit to things? To be persistent? Why or why not? Why is showing perseverance and commitment important?

Being a school student committing to something that will not give me anything materialistic was difficult as it would have been easier to not do it or leave it in between as waking up early every morning was very difficult but i think it favored me after completing the project as it gave me a sense of accomplishment and confidence about myself and also doing bigger project outside of school.

LO5: Demonstrate skills and benefits of working collaboratively.

Is working with others generally easy or difficult for you? Why?

Working with others has always been difficult for me as I am a very introverted person and sharing my opinions has always been difficult for me. But when the person I am working with makes me feel comfortable, it gets easier to work.

So, based on your answer to the above question, during this particular activity, was it easy or difficult for you to work with others? Did you have to work with anyone difficult? How did you handle it?

For this project I was working with the people I knew and was friends with so working on this was relatively easier when it came to collaborating with them. There were a few people who had different opinions than me and gave some ideas that I didn’t really like so I gave a few of my ideas and suggestions which helped satisfy everyone’s ideas.

Why is it important to be able to work collaboratively with others?

It is important because when working with people you get to know about more things like there could be an idea that I couldn’t have thought of but everyone’s unique perspective and ideas makes our work interesting and also makes it fun so you won’t get bored of it.

In conclusion,

Through this experience I was able to learn a lot of things while also having a fun experience. It gave me an opportunity to understand how to work collaboratively. It also benefited me, making me understand the way colour theory works, and how important creating compositions are.
