As part of CAS programme, I engaged myself in football during physical and health education, where I was placed as a defender. The duties of this post have benefited me for understanding better my preferences and weaknesses, for given me new responsibilities and for making me realize the importance of a collaboration.
LO1: Identify own strengths and develop areas for growth
When I was playing in the defensive position I considered my main asset to be in the ability to judge the game and make vital challenges appropriately. This made it easier for me to reason with my opponents and reduce complex attacks with relative ease. But a point that I considered as a weakness is that I should develop my prowess of passing accurately while swapping from the back line to the attacking line. This was important as it made it easy for my team to keep the ball once we had beaten the other team in the process of regaining the ball. I also concentrated on positioning to always be standing in a suitable position to block the opponents and to come and intercept dangerous passes.
LO2: Demonstrate that challenges have been undertaken, developing new skills
I understand that dribbling is probably one of the most crucial aspects involved in the game and as a defender, I struggled to balance my tackling because sometimes it was too early, at other times it was too late. In order to counter this, I focused more on individual drills that were aimed at footwork, decision making and one on one defense. I was also a part of being more interactive with my other defenders to ensure that they and I formed a rigid defensive line. All these challenges made me to build new attributes especially in the area of information sharing, mastering the speed of the game.
L5: Demonstrate skills and benefits of working collaboartively
First of all, one of the most important aspects of the defender level is working effectively in a team. I got to realize that it is very important to talk during the game to my partners particularly the goalie and other defenders in order to avoid lapses. During intensive cooperative gameplay we described the ways of targeting the enemies, managing the territory control and maintaining the formation. While it was our defense that took spot on the field to put on the pressure and kept changing over with the attack without any hangover. This taught me how much teamwork is vital in the success in the football playing field.
In any case, the time that I spent as a defender in football was beneficial for me in much the same way as it was beneficial to learn how to differentiate myself and collaborate with others. This role has brought significant change in terms of monitoring how one impacts the other team members hence changing my perception about responsibility and teamwork.
