My CAS experience of organizing and participating in food donation drives was both rewarding and challenging. Along with my friends, we took the initiative to buy and distribute food to those in need. We conducted three food drives where we donated essential items like lentils, rice, and biscuits. Occasionally, store owners generously supported our cause by providing free water bottles for distribution, recognizing the positive impact of our work. Despite the occasional difficulties, such as managing chaotic crowds, this service experience taught us valuable lessons about planning, teamwork, and ethics.
LO1 – Identify own strengths and develop areas for growth
During this experience, I recognized my ability to organize and lead, as I played a key role in coordinating the drives. However, I also realized the need to develop my skills in crowd management, as handling large groups of people, especially during tense moments, was a challenge. By the end of the third drive, I had improved my ability to remain calm and take decisive actions under pressure.
LO2 – Demonstrate that challenges have been undertaken, developing new skills in the process
One of the significant challenges we faced was controlling the crowd, particularly in an instance where some individuals became unruly. At one point, intoxicated people began to cause trouble, and we had to decide to leave the area for our safety. This taught us the importance of swift decision-making and how to navigate difficult, unpredictable situations. Through these challenges, we developed practical skills in conflict resolution and crowd management.
LO3 – Initiate and plan a CAS experience
Each food drive required thorough planning. We had to decide where to purchase food and which locations to target for distribution. We mainly chose areas outside temples because we could easily find people in need there. Creating a plan beforehand ensured that we were efficient in both purchasing and distributing the food. Without this preparation, the experience would have been far more difficult to manage.
LO4 – Show commitment to and perseverance in CAS experiences
Despite the challenges and occasional discomfort, we committed ourselves to carrying out three separate food drives. The difficulties we encountered—such as an aggressive crowd in one situation—did not deter us from completing the task. Our perseverance allowed us to make a tangible difference in the lives of many people by providing essential supplies.
LO5 – Demonstrate skills and benefits of working collaboratively
Working together as a team was crucial for the success of our food drives. The presence of my friends made crowd management more effective, and having more people allowed us to pool our resources, which increased our budget for purchasing food. Collaborative efforts also made it easier to coordinate tasks like packaging, distributing, and even handling unforeseen situations, proving that teamwork significantly enhanced the experience.
LO6 – Demonstrate engagement with issues of global significance
Food insecurity is a global issue, and through this CAS experience, we engaged with the problem on a local level. By distributing food to the needy, we directly contributed to alleviating hunger, even if only in a small way. Our experience highlighted how widespread food insecurity can be, and it made us more aware of the importance of taking action to address such issues.
LO7 – Recognize and consider the ethics of choices and actions
Our choice to donate food to those in need was rooted in ethical considerations. We were motivated by seeing people on the streets struggling to find food, and we felt compelled to help. Throughout the drives, we ensured that we conducted ourselves ethically, treating all recipients with respect and fairness. Even when faced with difficult circumstances, we remained committed to acting in a way that aligned with our moral values.
This experience was a valuable blend of learning and giving back to the community. It allowed me to grow personally while also making a positive impact on those in need.
