I organized and hosted a fundraising bake sale in support of the Mrida Education and Welfare Society. This experience was an incredible opportunity for me to combine my passion for baking with my commitment to helping underprivileged communities access better education.
LO1: Through this project, I discovered my ability to organize events and engage with people for a meaningful cause. My strength in communication came to the forefront as I promoted the event to students, teachers, and parents. However, I realized I need to work on time management, especially in balancing preparation for the bake sale with other academic commitments. Moving forward, I plan to create more detailed schedules for any future projects to ensure everything is done efficiently.
LO2: Hosting a fundraising event posed several challenges, including coordinating with the school administration, setting up a budget, and baking a large quantity of goods. It was also my first time handling a fundraising initiative, so I had to quickly learn about managing finances and how to price items to ensure we raised enough funds. I also improved my public speaking skills when I had to make announcements and explain the cause to potential buyers. Overcoming these challenges gave me a new appreciation for how much effort goes into fundraising for a cause.
LO3: This project required careful planning from the outset. I had to define the purpose (raising funds for Mrida), decide on logistics such as when and where to hold the sale and delegate tasks among volunteers. I created a timeline to ensure all baked goods were prepared on time, posters were made to promote the event, and the donation collection was properly arranged. Organizing this event independently gave me valuable experience in initiating and managing projects that benefit the community.
LO4: Throughout the project, there were moments where I felt overwhelmed, especially during the lead-up to the event when I had to balance baking with schoolwork. However, my commitment to the cause and belief in the importance of education for underprivileged children kept me motivated. I continued to push through these challenges, and the sense of accomplishment after successfully hosting the bake sale was extremely rewarding. The perseverance I showed during this project has inspired me to take on more CAS projects in the future.
LO5: Though I led the project, I certainly didn’t do it alone. Several friends volunteered to help with baking, and others assisted during the sale by helping set up and engage with customers. Working together was essential to the success of the event. I learned the importance of teamwork and communication, especially when tasks had to be divided and coordinated. Collaborating with others helped streamline the process, and it was rewarding to see how we could combine our efforts for a greater cause.
LO6: The funds raised through this bake sale directly support the Mrida Education and Welfare Society, an organization dedicated to providing educational opportunities for children from underserved communities. Access to quality education is a globally significant issue, as it can transform lives and break cycles of poverty. By supporting Mrida’s mission, I was able to contribute to this larger, global effort to promote education for all. This project also deepened my understanding of how small, local actions can make a difference in addressing global challenges.
LO7: Throughout the project, I was aware of the ethical implications of my actions. The choice to support an educational cause was deliberate, as I believe education is a fundamental right that should be accessible to everyone. I also made sure to be transparent with the funds raised, providing clear communication about how much money was collected and how it would be used to support the Mrida Education and Welfare Society. This experience reinforced my belief in the importance of honesty and accountability in all projects. Additionally, we made sure none of the leftover food was wasted instead we distributed the leftover food to slum areas to avoid food wastage.
