Cross Country Marathon

Participating in the cross-country marathon was an incredible test of my physical and mental endurance. I’ve always been someone who enjoys challenges, but this experience pushed me to my limits in ways I hadn’t anticipated. The thrill of the race, the discipline required during training, and the sense of accomplishment I felt at the finish line made it an unforgettable part of my CAS journey.

Identifying My Strengths and Areas for Growth (L1)

During the marathon, I realized that while I had a decent level of fitness, my endurance needed work. The race required a combination of stamina and mental toughness, and there were moments where I felt like giving up. However, I also discovered my strength in perseverance. Pushing through the tough moments, especially when fatigue set in, showed me that I had the resilience to keep going even when my body was telling me to stop. This highlighted an area for growth—I now know I need to focus more on building endurance in my future training.

Challenges Undertaken and New Skills Developed (L2)

The biggest challenge I faced was maintaining pace throughout the marathon. Running such a long distance required careful planning, from knowing how fast to start to managing energy levels over the course of the race. I developed new skills in pacing myself, understanding when to push harder and when to slow down to conserve energy. Additionally, I learned a lot about mental discipline—staying focused and positive even when exhaustion hit was one of the toughest parts of the experience.

Demonstrating Perseverance and Commitment (L4)

Training for the marathon wasn’t easy. There were days when I didn’t feel like getting up early to run or when my muscles were sore from the previous day’s workout. But committing to the race meant pushing through the discomfort and staying focused on my goal. This experience taught me a lot about the value of perseverance. Crossing the finish line after months of preparation and hard work made every early morning and every tough run worth it.

Collaborative Work and Team Spirit (L5)

Although the marathon was an individual race, the spirit of teamwork was still very present. I trained with a group of friends, and we supported each other throughout the process. Whether it was motivating each other during tough training sessions or cheering each other on during the race, this experience showed me how important collaboration and encouragement are, even in an individual pursuit. Having a team of supporters made the journey more enjoyable and helped me push through difficult moments.

Participating in the cross-country marathon was a transformative experience that helped me grow in various aspects of the IB learner profile. As a Balanced individual, I had to manage my training schedule alongside my academic commitments, ensuring I stayed fit without compromising my studies. This experience also pushed me to be a Risk-taker, as I stepped out of my comfort zone and challenged my physical limits, not knowing how my body and mind would respond to such a demanding race.

Throughout the marathon preparation, I developed as a Thinker, learning to strategize and pace myself during training and the race itself, making thoughtful decisions about how to manage energy levels and stay motivated. Lastly, the teamwork and support I experienced during the training process helped me grow as a Communicator, as I exchanged ideas and motivated fellow runners, fostering a spirit of mutual encouragement. This experience not only built my resilience and endurance but also strengthened the core attributes that will continue to benefit me in future challenges.
