Participating in the animal shelter program has been an enriching and eye-opening experience. I gained invaluable insights into animal welfare, understanding not only the practical side of caring for animals but also the ethical and emotional dimensions involved.

Working at the shelter made me more conscious of the ethical responsibility we have toward animals. Every choice I made—whether in feeding, handling, or providing care—had a direct impact on their well-being. I became more aware of the broader issues of animal neglect and abandonment, and the role that humans play in both causing and solving these problems. This awareness reinforced my belief that every action we take toward animals needs to be grounded in kindness, empathy, and respect for life.

The shelter program required a long-term commitment and perseverance. Taking care of animals isn’t always easy—there were days when tasks felt overwhelming, especially when faced with injured or frightened animals. However, seeing the progress in the animals’ health and behavior reinforced my commitment. By showing up consistently and working through difficult moments, I developed resilience and learned the importance of sticking with a cause, even when challenges arose.
Engagement with Issues of Global Significance (L6)
Animal welfare is an issue of global significance, as neglect and abandonment of animals happen everywhere. Through this experience, I engaged with this larger global issue on a local scale, understanding how shelters play a vital role in rescuing, rehabilitating, and rehoming animals. I also became more aware of the importance of promoting responsible pet ownership and the need for better animal protection policies around the world.
Demonstrate that Challenges Have Been Undertaken, Developing New Skills (L2)
One of the biggest challenges I faced was learning how to work with animals that were anxious or fearful due to past trauma. It required patience, calmness, and an ability to read their body language to provide the right care. Over time, I developed new skills in handling animals, building trust with them, and providing them with a sense of safety. Additionally, I improved my organizational skills by helping with shelter routines and ensuring that all tasks were completed on time.
This experience at the animal shelter deeply enhanced my development across multiple learner profile attributes. As a Caring individual, I showed empathy and compassion toward animals that had been neglected or abandoned, ensuring their well-being and comfort. The program also required me to be a Risk-taker, as I stepped out of my comfort zone by working with animals in unpredictable situations, learning to handle their fear and anxiety with patience.
I improved as a Communicator by collaborating with shelter staff, understanding animal behavior through observation, and effectively advocating for animal welfare. Additionally, being Balanced was essential as I managed my academic commitments alongside volunteering, learning how to prioritize my responsibilities and maintain my well-being.
