Math Club(CAS project)

As part of my CAS project, I initiated and hosted a math club aimed at fostering a deeper appreciation for mathematics among students across grades 9 to 12. Over the course of the academic year, I conducted sessions twice a month, with each session lasting 1.5 hours. In total, I worked with around 50 to 60 students, divided into pairs of grades, providing a tailored learning experience for each group. The club focused on teaching math concepts that students could expect in their future studies, using innovative methods such as interactive games and creative activities to make math fun and engaging. My goal was to help students not only understand mathematical principles but also develop a genuine fondness for the subject.

LO 1
In hosting the math club, I identified my strength in explaining complex concepts in simple, engaging ways, which helped students from different grades understand difficult math topics. However, I also realized that I needed to improve my time management, especially in structuring lessons to fit into the 1.5-hour sessions effectively. Over time, I developed this skill by planning the flow of each session more carefully, ensuring we covered all topics while keeping it fun and interactive.

LO 2
One of the biggest challenges I faced was teaching students across different grades, each with varying levels of math proficiency. To address this, I developed the skill of adapting my teaching methods, ensuring that I could simplify complex concepts for younger students while also challenging older students with more advanced material. I also had to learn and revise new math concepts myself to stay ahead and effectively guide them, which improved both my subject knowledge and my teaching ability.

LO 3
Initiating the math club involved coordinating with teachers and students to schedule sessions and ensure that the content I prepared would meet the needs of each grade level. Planning the sessions required balancing engaging activities with focused learning, which I achieved by incorporating fun games and practical applications of math concepts. This experience helped me refine my organizational and planning skills, making the club both educational and enjoyable.

LO 4
Running the math club twice a month required consistent dedication. Despite the challenge of juggling this responsibility with my own academic workload, I remained committed to providing a valuable experience for the students. I ensured that every session was well-prepared and tailored to their needs, and I took the time to continuously improve my teaching strategies based on feedback. This perseverance was key to maintaining the club’s success over time.

LO 5
Working collaboratively with the students was essential to the club’s success. I encouraged peer learning within the groups, allowing students to help one another when needed. This collaboration fostered a supportive environment and made learning math more interactive. Additionally, I worked with other math teachers to refine the content of each session, benefiting from their insights to enhance the students’ learning experience.

LO 6
Mathematics is a universal language, and by helping students develop a strong foundation in math, I contributed to a skill set that is essential for solving global problems. By fostering a love for math through interactive and engaging activities, I aimed to inspire students to pursue math-related fields that could address challenges like technological advancements, environmental sustainability, and innovation in various sectors.

LO 7
While running the math club, I was mindful of ensuring that each student, regardless of their math ability, received equal attention and support. I made it a priority to create an inclusive environment where students felt comfortable asking questions without fear of judgment. Additionally, I ensured that the games and teaching methods I used were fair and accessible to all, avoiding favoritism and ensuring that every participant had an equal opportunity to learn.

Through hosting the math club, I developed a range of skills that extended beyond teaching. I learned to adapt my methods to suit different grade levels, improving my communication and problem-solving abilities. Planning and organizing regular sessions helped refine my time management, while balancing this commitment with my own studies taught me perseverance and dedication. Collaborating with students and teachers enhanced my teamwork skills, creating an engaging and supportive learning environment. I also gained a deeper understanding of the global significance of math and the ethical responsibility of ensuring inclusivity and fairness in education. Overall, this project strengthened my leadership, adaptability, and collaborative skills, contributing to my growth as both a student and a mentor.
