In December, I embarked on a 6-day rural immersion trip to Sankheda, Gujarat, where I had the unique opportunity to explore the rural lifestyle and engage deeply with the local community. The trip, organized in collaboration with Mr. Maganbhai Ahir of Gir Organics, offered a holistic experience of farming, interacting with villagers, and learning about the realities of rural India. From harvesting crops to teaching children, this journey allowed me to step outside my comfort zone and gain new perspectives on life, education, and sustainable farming.

LO2 – Demonstrate that challenges have been undertaken, developing new skills:

Throughout the trip, I encountered several challenges that tested my resilience and adaptability. One of the most significant hurdles was the language barrier, despite being Gujarati myself. Though I understand the language, my lack of fluency made it difficult to communicate effectively with the locals. This, combined with long hours working in the fields without many modern comforts, required patience and endurance. Additionally, being the only one from my group of friends posed social challenges, but this discomfort helped me grow. I became more adaptable, improved my communication skills, and learned to embrace new experiences, ultimately gaining a deeper appreciation for rural life.

LO4 – Show perseverance and commitment in CAS experience:

One of the most rewarding aspects of this trip was my full commitment to the farming activities, despite their physical demands. We harvested spinach under the hot sun and participated in sowing new crops, tasks that helped me understand the hard work that farmers invest in their fields. These activities were exhausting, yet I was determined to complete them, as they offered valuable insights into the agricultural practices that sustain rural communities. This perseverance helped me learn practical farming techniques while also fostering a deeper understanding of the challenges rural farmers face daily. Through this, I gained a firsthand appreciation of rural life’s perseverance and resilience.

LO6 – Engagement with issues of global significance:

Education is a global issue, especially in underprivileged communities where access to quality learning is limited. During our visit to the ashramshala, I conducted science experiments with the local children, teaching them concepts like density and volcano reactions through engaging demonstrations. Although resources were limited, the children’s enthusiasm was inspiring. This experience highlighted the importance of hands-on learning, especially in rural areas, where traditional teaching methods can fall short. Engaging with these children helped bridge the gap in educational opportunities, addressing the broader issue of inequality in access to quality education.

In conclusion, my trip to Sankheda was a deeply enriching experience that exposed me to the realities of rural life, taught me new skills, and allowed me to engage with significant global issues. Through perseverance, collaboration, and service, I learned the value of hard work, the importance of education, and the need to bridge the gap between urban and rural communities.
