As part of a project called HealthHive, my friends and I visited a government school to teach children about the importance of physical exercise. The aim of the project was to educate the students on how physical activity can positively impact their health and overall well-being. We not only explained the significance of regular exercise but also demonstrated practical exercises they could incorporate into their daily routines. The day was structured with various stations, including educational sessions, football, fun games, and exercises like jumping jacks and high knees. It was a rewarding experience, but one that came with its own set of challenges and opportunities for growth.
LO2 – Demonstrate that challenges have been undertaken, developing new skills:
During the project, we faced several challenges that pushed us out of our comfort zones. One of the biggest obstacles was working with a group of children who were not familiar with structured physical activity. Explaining the exercises and keeping their attention required a lot of patience, especially since many of them had never been exposed to formal exercise routines before. Additionally, language barriers and varying levels of interest meant that we had to be creative with our teaching methods. To overcome these challenges, I learned how to break down complex concepts into simpler, more engaging explanations. I also improved my ability to adapt on the spot, improvising with fun games and activities to maintain the children’s interest. This experience helped me develop better communication and problem-solving skills, particularly in dealing with a large group of kids with different learning needs.
LO4 – Show perseverance and commitment in CAS experience:
Our commitment to the HealthHive project was tested on several occasions. We faced multiple scheduling issues, as coordinating a time that worked for both the school and our team was a challenge. On top of that, logistical hurdles, such as securing space for our activity stations and managing the large group of students, sometimes felt overwhelming. At one point, weather conditions threatened to cancel our outdoor activities, but we quickly pivoted and rearranged the stations indoors. Despite these setbacks, we were determined to see the project through to the end. By staying committed and finding solutions to the various challenges, we ensured that the project ran smoothly. This perseverance not only helped us succeed but also taught us the importance of adaptability and creative thinking in difficult situations.
LO5 – Demonstrate skills and benefits of working collaboratively:
The success of HealthHive was largely due to the collaborative effort of our entire team. We divided the responsibilities among ourselves, with each of us taking charge of different stations—education, football, exercise, and games. This division of labor required constant communication and coordination to ensure everything flowed smoothly. I worked closely with my peers to organize the exercise and football stations, where we alternated between teaching and demonstrating the activities. Collaboration also extended to managing the group of students, as we had to work together to keep them engaged and ensure that each station ran on time. By relying on each other’s strengths and sharing the workload, we were able to create an impactful experience for the children. This experience reinforced the importance of teamwork and showed how much can be achieved when we work together toward a common goal.
HealthHive was a transformative experience that not only allowed us to teach important life skills but also helped me grow personally. The challenges we faced strengthened my ability to adapt and persevere, while the collaborative effort of our team demonstrated the power of working together. The project gave us the chance to make a real difference in the lives of the children we worked with, instilling in them the importance of physical activity and healthy living.
