As part of my CAS journey, I had the privilege of participating in a week-long rural immersion program in the village of Sankheda. This experience allowed me to step out of my comfort zone and fully immerse myself in the vibrant culture and lifestyle of a rural Indian community. It was an eye-opening and transformative journey that challenged me in ways I never could have anticipated.
Learning Outcome 1: Identify own strengths and develop areas for growth
The rural immersion in Sankheda provided me with a rare opportunity to truly understand myself better. Living and working alongside the villagers, I was able to identify my own strengths, such as my adaptability, resilience, and willingness to learn. However, it also highlighted areas for growth, particularly in my communication skills and cultural awareness. Navigating the language barrier and adapting to unfamiliar customs pushed me to step outside my usual frame of reference and develop a more open and empathetic mindset.
Learning Outcome 3: Demonstrate how to initiate and plan a CAS experience
Participating in this rural immersion program required careful planning and preparation on my part. I worked closely with the organizers to ensure the program aligned with my goals and the CAS learning objectives. This included researching the local community, anticipating potential challenges, and coordinating activities. The experience of initiating and planning this CAS experience has equipped me with valuable project management skills that I can apply to future endeavors.
Learning Outcome 7: Recognize and consider the ethics of choices and actions
Throughout the rural immersion, I was constantly challenged to reflect on the ethical implications of my choices and actions. As I interacted with the villagers and learned about their daily struggles, I gained a deeper understanding of the social and economic inequalities that exist in our society. This experience has prompted me to question my own biases and preconceptions, and has inspired me to become a more socially conscious and responsible global citizen.
Learning Outcome 4: Show commitment to and perseverance in CAS experiences
The rural immersion program in Sankheda was a physically and mentally demanding experience, but I remained committed and persevered throughout the entire week. Despite the occasional challenges and discomforts, I embraced each new experience with an open mind and a willingness to learn. This commitment and perseverance not only allowed me to fully immerse myself in the program, but also strengthened my resilience and self-discipline.
In conclusion, the rural immersion in Sankheda has been a transformative CAS experience that has profoundly impacted my personal growth and understanding of the world around me. Through the lens of Learning Outcomes 1, 3, 7, and 4, I have gained a newfound appreciation for the diversity of human experiences and the importance of ethical decision-making. This experience has inspired me to continue seeking out opportunities to engage with and learn from marginalized communities, and to use my knowledge and skills to make a positive difference in the world.
