For my CAS experience, I engaged in athletics, specifically in track and field events. Over the past year, I have trained rigorously, focusing on endurance, strength, flexibility, and agility. Under the guidance of a school coach, I train four times a week and have participated in various district and national-level competitions, including the Surat Open Championship. In 2023 and 2024, I competed in both the 400-meter dash and long jump, earning bronze and silver medals, respectively. These experiences have enhanced my physical fitness and overall well-being. This activity fits solely under CAS’s “Activity†strand, as it is not related to community service or creativity. I chose athletics because of my passion for sports and its profound impact on my health and discipline.
Learning Outcome 1: Identifying Strengths and Areas for Growth
Through this experience, I’ve gained a better understanding of my strengths and weaknesses as an athlete. One of my strengths is my endurance, which plays a crucial role in both the 400-meter dash and long jump. I realized that while my endurance is strong, my flexibility, particularly in the long jump, is an area that needs improvement. Now that I’m aware of this, I feel more focused and motivated to work on this aspect. Recognizing one’s strengths and weaknesses is essential because it enables us to refine our skills and push past our limits. If I had improved my flexibility earlier, I might have achieved even better results in long jump competitions.
Learning Outcome 2: Overcoming Challenges and Developing New Skills
Training for district and national-level tournaments was physically and mentally challenging. The intensity of the workouts, the pressure of competition, and the demands of balancing academics with sports created a significant challenge. I had never participated in such high-stakes competitions before, which made the experience both exciting and daunting. To overcome these challenges, I pushed myself in training, focusing on maintaining discipline and consistency. Although there were moments when I doubted my abilities, persevering through these difficulties helped me develop mental toughness. Undertaking such challenges is vital as it promotes personal growth and the discovery of new skills, like improved stamina and the ability to stay calm under pressure, which will benefit me in future competitions and beyond. This challenge also strengthened my sense of self-discipline, which makes me feel more confident in tackling future obstacles.
Learning Outcome 4: Demonstrating Commitment and Perseverance
The commitment required for this activity was immense. Training four times a week, even when I felt physically exhausted or when academic pressures mounted, tested my dedication. Yet, the perseverance I showed during the training and competitions paid off, as evidenced by my performance in the tournaments. Commitment has never been easy for me, especially when managing multiple responsibilities, but this experience taught me the importance of persistence in achieving goals. Perseverance and commitment are crucial not only for success in sports but also in all aspects of life. They build resilience and push us to realize our potential.
Final Takeaway
Through this athletic involvement, I developed several learner profile characteristics, including being balanced, reflective, and resilient. My ability to balance sports with academics reflects my commitment to personal well-being, and through reflection, I continue to refine my performance in competitions. This activity has also directly connected to the study of physics, particularly in understanding the mechanics of motion, which helps me in sports like long jump. The highlight of this experience was not only winning medals but also the sense of accomplishment from pushing my physical and mental limits. This experience challenged my perseverance and commitment, showing me that even in moments of doubt, dedication leads to success. Looking forward, I plan to apply this resilience in other areas of my life and contribute to society by encouraging a healthy, active lifestyle among my peers.
